: Superchips BLUEFIN - Good or Bad Idea???

I have wanted more power from my car for a while now, and decided a while back that getting a Bluefin was the way to go (+33bhp). Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember they were somewhere in the region of £300.

I just checked the Superchips website and it looks as though I can now get a Bluefin for £199 inc. vat. This seems very good value for money to me.

Obviously the positive aspect of the Bluefin is the power increase and but what are the negatives? Insurance premium being one I can think of, worse MPG? Does the car become less reliable?

For the potential 33bhp gain, £199 seems very reasonable to me.

Your thoughts?

Thanks. :)

I have Bluefin on my Mondeo TDCI ST & would swear by it, I'm also considering putting it on my Mini cooper S as it is cheaper than the price for a Mondeo but also looking at other options too.
On a diesel it's certainly brilliant, easy to install & Superchips can email you modified maps if you have problems. They also give a guarantee for your engine. As for the MPG claims, I personally think its nonsense, how can you make more power & use less fuel? I've got two chipped diesels & while the power increase is great, fuel economy is no better. Saying that it's not noticeably worse.
I've no experience of Bluefin on a petrol engine but if it's as good as it is on a diesel , then £199 is a snip for some cheap extra power.

That's exactly my thought right now, £199 is remarkably cheap for 33bhp and I'm starting to think I'll just do it!
What happened with your insurance premium? Did it go up or did you forget to tell them?
I imagine mine would go up a lot since I'm 18 and alarm bells will ring when they see a young driver wanting more power.

Money well spent on a MINI One ... unless the insurance hit is too much ;)

I'm also considering putting it on my Mini cooper S ...
Waste of money on a Cooper S and probably not a good idea if you have the JCW Tuning Kit fitted.

I was thinking about doing the exact same thing to my mini as adding the bigger wheels I have noticed a drop in acceleration but nothing to drastic, just would be nice to have the extra power there BUT for me it's not to be at the moment :(
After talking to my insurance company about adding a K&N filter they wanted an extra £30+ per month :aargh: god knows what they would want if I get her chipped!

I know most will say they will never know but I can't help thinking if the worse happened and they see my mini one with 17" wheels , spoiler, has been lowered, do you think they would check if I chipped it also ? Hmmm lol

I think you'd be fine mate, and obviously since it's a reversible mod, you could always do that if the worst did happen!
I think you should do it, and then let me decide whether it's worth the £200 after you've spent your money ;)

Well i have just ordered the Bluefin Remap! :)

I will post back and give an honest opinion , i would expect a big difference from 90bhp to 123bhp

Installed the Bluefin tonight and have to say i am very impressed , to put it simply it just gives you much more power ( obviously ) basically if you have a mini one just now and you watch your rev counter at 1st 2nd 3rd gear you will notice the more you put your foot down your rev count very quickly rises , well after bluefin is installed you can floor it in 2nd and 3rd and its hard to max your rev counter! she just keeps pulling :)

Obviously its not like someone has just fitted a turbo lol but there is no doubt at all you have much more power at your feet.

Honest opinion , is it worth the £199 i paid

Every single penny!!

And now i also have a tool that can read engine fault codes :)

Noticed that Bluefin only reads fault codes on some cars , does anyone know if it works on the mini? Contacted bluefin but just incase someone on here has used it before?

Not a big deal as obviously not the reason i bought it! Would just be a nice bonus :)

Bluefin just got back to me , the diagnostics unfortunately does not work on any BMW Mini Bluefins :(

Still worth the £199 for the mini one though :)

Harvey, how's the Bluefin been since you had it installed? I've got one on the way here! Won it on eBay for £80 brand new which I was happy with, obviously! Lets just hope it hasn't already been used and the seller isn't talking rubbish. Have you managed to see if the top speed is increased after installing it? Just curious, obviously

Hi mate,

In my opinion it does increase all round performance, as I said before, it's no turbo but you certainly notice it, if you did get it for that price you got a bargain mate! I paid £200 and think its worth every penny, second best mod I have done, first still has to be my rev counter and speedo lights!

Cheers

I had the Bluefin on my 02 mini one. Power increase is dramatic! Get the car above 4k and it pulls hard to 6.2k! It is a completely different car to drive after, so much more fun! MPG will decrease but mot too much, depends on driving style. I had no reliability issues at all. I am selling my car so have restored the factory settings. I contacted bluefin today and because it is under 12months from I bought it, I can have the device reset free of charge and keep or sell it. Will be selling it shortly.
