Hoping someone can help me, I have a mini cooper 03. Recently i had the ABS and tyre pressure warning lights come up intermittently. I took it to BMW and they diagnosed it as ABS sensor, left back. They also gave me a nice big fat quote to fix it. So I contacted my mechanic and he fitted it for half the amount. Using the code, he got the correct part and when I got the car back the light was off and all seemed fine.

A couple of days later i got into my mini and the lights came back on. If I manually reset the tyre pressure warning light it disappears and then follows the abs light but they always return a couple of days or a day later. I called my mechanic, he said he knows someone who has the equipment to hard reset the code and clear it.

I had this done on Saturday, and he said the same fault appeared as BMW had said and he cleared it and tested again and it was gone. Drove the car Saturday and Sunday, no probs. Get in the car this morning and the lights are both on again!! grrrr.....anyone know of this or know what it could be before i go back to BMW and they charge me lots of money to find out. I've had weird problems in the past with those lights in my 2004 mcs. Turns out one of the wires to the front left brakes was being cut into by the suport bracket causing random problems. I insulated it with rtv and rerouted it slightly and the problems went away. The cut wire was not obvious at all until it was removed from all of its holders and examined closely. Check all the wiring to the brakes, not just the wheel you suspect.

I done my sensor yesterday. Crapy job. Had drill it out. If they had to drill it out some bits could of fallen into the hole and down into the bearing part it's not dangerous but could couse it to flag up again. Take wheel if and look right behind the bearing underneath kind of. Spin the bearing and see if there's any bits stuck. Happened to me. Also check the tire pressure. Give me a shout if you need more info

Hi guys, thank you for your replies, sorry not been back didn't know you had replied! I Went to BMW yesterday with it as the lights are still coming on and off all the time. They pulled it apart and checked all the wiring. They swapped over the sensors too, cleared the fault. Again. Then said if it comes on again they need a day to look at it. I drove off, all fine. That evening drove it again, lights back on. So far this has cost me £300 and still at square one! Really not happy about it. Going to call them tomorrow and say this is just crazy. She did say she will give me free courtesy car and discount the amount they charge to find it but surely being 'mini' specialists they should know what's wrong with it!? So annoying and expensive. Dreading what they are going to charge me next week to look again. I can't do it myself as I have never done mechanical work myself. Any help or advice would be great thanks. :mad:

Hi everyone, James thank you for your message, BMW have come back and said that they have checked it all and they think its the wheel bearing that needs replacing. Could be what you said before though. They want £400 to replace it!

Spray some cleaner on the bearings.
I forgot what I used but they are not sure if it is the bearing could pay 400 for nothing

BMW are hopeless

I cant see how they can keep charging 300 quid, give that a go, and if it doesnt work we will fit another 300 quids worth and see if that works.
Perhaps if they have fitted something that didnt need to be fitted to start with they should take it off and fit the part that does for no extra charge?
That would encourage them to get it right first time I should think?

Your right they ain't very fair and the amount of money they charge for partsnthat didn't need doing.

This may help some of you who are having an issue resetting ABS/TPMS light.
My wife's 2003 Cooper can up with both lights and would not reset. I borrowed a diag. machine and great it said Rear Left Wheel sensor, so with new sensor installed I thought all would be OK, but no.
So started chasing the wiring back to the ABS unit where I found the blue and brown cables from the offending sensor along with the rest of the loom so tight against the bottom of the ABS unit that it had shorted 1 of the cables with 10 years of wear to the base of the ABS control unit. Re insulated the loom with some large heat shrink to fit over loom plug and then the cables and all is good once again.
