: Gearbox changed now power steering failed... checked in car fuses.

Hi everyone,

My poorly mini has been off the road for a few weeks having had the gearbox fail on me (its an R50 with 5 speed midland gearbox), anyway... got a re-conned box for it and that's been fitted over the past few days by a couple of my boyfriends friends who had to remove the sub frame/fuse box and a hell of a lot more to switch the gearbox over.

All put back together today and the power steering isn't working, now this raises too many questions as the power steering pump itself was temperamental for a while a few months back until it was took apart and all the filings from the brushes were removed... its worked perfectly since then and up until the point the car was put back together.

I've checked fuses F39-41 in the car in the passenger foot well and none have gone, now this then leads me to the FL4 fuse under the in engine fuse box which appears to be a little bit of a pain to get to.

Is there an easy way to check for power at the power steering connection end?

I also don't think its the pump because when the pump failed previously, I was able to communicate with the power steering unit through INPA which told me there was a short circuit. This time I am unable to communicate with the pump so I feel there is some kind of wiring/fuse problem preventing the power steering from working.

Any help would be appreciated!
Charl

Have you checked the wiring connector/pins to the pump for corrosion which is a common problem?

I guess you have read this:

Post#8 here shows how to access the hidden FL4 fuse:

Have you checked the two connections on the pump are fully home. This happened on a clutch I did and I hadn't noticed the connector was not quite engaged, took me about half an hour to find it!

Turns out it was one of the connectors not being plugged in, it was late and dark but soon found it! The guy that changed the gearbox only thought there was one for some reason! Doh :).
