Hi,

A bit of a disaster going on. To cut a long story short the aircon hasn't been working in my car for 2 or 3 years. BMW in Gloucester have been looking into it.

Initially it was £75 to diagnose but they couldn't as they could get any coloured gas into the system so they charged £50.

£250 for a new valve. Didn't fix it.

Said the fan was seized and would be £300 to repair. They got ready to do that today but then noticed that the condenser was leaking. That would be another £420 to fix. No guarantee it will work at the end but that's over £1000.

So, I'm wondering....having only paid for the diagnosis so far and the new valve (and not sure what the charge would be just to put the car back together without the fan) if I have any other options?

Are there specialists who could do the work for less? Are there secondhand or aftermarket aircon systems that could be fitted?

I'm just nervous about spending another £720 which is bad enough but also the prospect my aircon still won't be working!

Any help or advice would be greatly received.

I would go to an independent air con specialist and get their verdict on what is needed and for how much. If it has not been working for 2 or 3 years then the prospects are not good as not running the system for so long now means many seals will have dried out causing leaks and corrosion can set in internally, the parts required will be expensive new from BMW and although used parts are available there will be no guarantees that they will work.....after you have paid for labour charges.
