I recently been hearing a continuous knocking sound, as soon as I turn off the engine. Im about to hit the 5k mark for a oil change, no idea !!!!


any suggestions ??!!?

How old is the car?
How long does the knocking go on for?
Is the key completely removed from the ignition?
Where is it coming from (front? Rear? Passenger side? Drivers side?)
Metallic?
Is the car "dieseling"?
Still under warranty?

It's a '08 MCS, no longer on warranty, the key is out and the knocking sounds

begins with like a 3-4 min interval comes from the front. It's been like this for

over a week now, and it goes on for a good 20-25 min after shut off. I don't

think its dieseling, cuz it's the first time it happens since i've gotten the car 2 half

yrs ago. I also have notice and find my car is no pushing or is not responding like

it used to, when I want it to push, Hope it helps.

An engine can run on after switching off if its getting too hot, causes pre ignition of the fuel in the engine and causes it to run on for a while, I had this happen on an old Triumph TR4 years ago, that did it for around 30 secs after switching off, you had to stall it to stop it.
That was caused by the engine getting too hot, not quite to overheating stage but just below, a new radiator and an electric fan solved that one.
Have you looked at your engine when its doing it? is the engine turning?

I got this sometimes from my 07 MCS. I thought it came frome the engine bay. It was almost like the water was banging around in the hoses. I always put my car away and used to get this when it was parked up and locked.

Turbo water pump runs on after shut down, maybe its that.

Its very difficult to describe noises in words as to whats happening, knocking? is it knocking as hammering on a door? or just ticking as components cool down.
Ive heard before that some old biddy was complaining about her car making a knocking noise when turning a corner, turned out it was the indicator flasher unit ticking. :rolleyes:

After reading your replies, I think its the ticking noise that comes along as components as cooling off.

I dunno ?!?! maybe ever since we had the recall on the water pump, it's been occurring more and more often.

I get that knocking noise. Sounds like it's coming from the rear end of the car. I suspect pressure in the tank bleeding off. Usually doesn't last very long and I hear the noise when I pull the car in the garage and turn it off.

No im pretty sure my sound comes from the front, dunno wat it is ..
