: MINI subwoofer Mardav Dec 18th, 2002, 04:11 PM Hi everyone, just a note to let you know I got my JL Audio stealthbox installed today and it is awesome! If you are looking for an easy solution to the subwoofer problem, this is it. The box comes with a 10" sub that seems just perfect for this little car. When installed in the boot it fits perfect and doesn't look terribly out of place. I also installed an amp from JL along with new 6.5" JL component speakers in the front (the rears are now disconnected) and the sound is just unbelievable, even with the factory radio and CD Changer. The stealthbox is new, and probably not on JL's web site yet, but they do have them.
Check this out when you can! DaveNagy Dec 18th, 2002, 04:50 PM Pic please!
-Dave Mardav Dec 18th, 2002, 04:54 PM Hi Dave,
O.K. I'm working on that. s/b by tomorrow. ModoMini Dec 18th, 2002, 08:23 PM Went by their web site and they still do not have it listed. I've been looking forward to this after seeing an install at the Mini Meet 3 here in Florida. Mardav Dec 18th, 2002, 09:02 PM Hi Mark,
I spoke with JL today, they just finished photos and will have it up soon. I'll take photos of my install tomorrow (12-19) and post them if I can figure out how!
Marc:D Greg Dec 18th, 2002, 10:13 PM Has anyone tried the Kenwood WOOX? I read a good review a while back, but it wasn't tested in a MINI. Mardav Dec 19th, 2002, 03:01 PM I've put pics up in the personal gallery under mardav. My first attempt with a dig camera. You can't tell from the pics, but the colors (black) and materials do match. macncheese Dec 19th, 2002, 03:35 PM Neat! Is the stealthbox just the item to the left or do you get the fancy shmancy amprack as well? Sometime stealthboxes have an amprack, sometimes they dont...

that amprack/changer holder looks pretty custom. did the shop do that? They could make some money selling those, thats a neat way to house a changer + hide the amp!
Is that the farthest to the left the box can go? I can't tell but is there space to have it flush against the side of the car? CUTiger3 Dec 19th, 2002, 05:14 PM Please compare/contrast the sound to other sub's you have owned or heard. TIA Yeagy Dec 19th, 2002, 05:35 PM i searched the gallery on the top banner...and nothing came up...can somebody please post a link..
thanks
yeagy Mardav Dec 19th, 2002, 06:31 PM sorry for any confusion. the stealthbox is on the left, it looks sorta like a spare tire might be underneath instead of the nifty subwoofer. The amp rack was not included it was built by Audio Excellence here in Orlando, they do a lot of custom work and really rose to this challenge. what you can't see in the pic is that the amp lights show through the bars on the left side of the MINI logo! It really is hard to believe this was not originally part of the car when you see it.
There is also a stealth box that mounts on the right (but that's where the factory CD changer goes) if you prefer or don't have a cd changer there. If you put in both boxes you could run two subs.
As far as the sound, it really sounds as good as most systems I have heard (much better than most actually) but bear in mind I don't crank up the bass so much that you lose the mids and highs, so if you just want to blow the windshield out, then use two stealthboxes (left and right of course) with one or two dedicated amps and there you go! Dom ger_e31 Dec 19th, 2002, 11:00 PM If you don't mind, how much was the stealthbox? JL Audio doesn't post their prices on the web. Thanks Mardav Dec 20th, 2002, 12:50 AM The stealthbox will be available according to JL at their dealers after the first of the year. I believe the list price is around $500. I got mine as part of a package, so I don't know the exact price. ger_e31 Dec 20th, 2002, 09:58 AM Just called JL Audio....You lucky dog, I hear yours was a prototype so they could take pictures and write the instruction manual. The tech rep said it wasn't even close to shipping (he guessed around the end of January). He also guestimated a price of around $400 plus of minus. ModoMini Dec 20th, 2002, 10:10 AM Still a good price ballpark! Mardav Dec 20th, 2002, 10:56 AM Yep, I am a lucky dog! nfo Dec 20th, 2002, 12:04 PM -------->ger_e31.
let me know if you know any good places in chicago for audio installs. i'd like to have some work done soon, this jl stealthbox looks like the thing i've been waiting for!!! Grinder Dec 20th, 2002, 04:54 PM In the pictures, the "carpeting" (for lack of a better word) looks like a different color on the sub than on the seatbacks--and the floor looks like a different color than the sides!!? Is that just because it was a prototype, or will the production version be mis-matched like that also? Mardav Dec 20th, 2002, 05:34 PM Grinder,
The upholstery matches very, very closely. It looks bad in the photo because the photographer (me) doesn't know how to work the camera, and didn't realize how important lighting is. Likewise the amp rack. I had a guy today who looked at the install and was so convinced that it was oem, he wanted to bet me $50 bucks (but his wife wouldn't let him, drat!) If I can master the camera this weekend I'll retake the pictures. | |
