Just heard a bunch of Mini2ers talking about this new Cooper RS coming out? Anyone know for sure if this is true? Any details!?!?

I basically heard that it is basically a Cooper S but instead of the base 163hp, it will now have around 200hp? Can anybody verify this?!

Thanks for the help! :D

Where did you hear that??

I've never heard the name Cooper RS for it until now, but I read an article last fall about it. A credible source said that the Cooper S was going to be sent through BMW's M Division, which still did not mean they were going to sell a MINI placed above the Cooper S in the product line. I'm not sure how much more the guys at M would want to do with the car, especially with the price the Cooper S has (especially once you start adding options), but they were sure the minimum horsepower would be around 230.

i have heard of the following rumored cars but no "RS".

- Alpina 200hp version MCS (this has been the rumor for the past couple of years, and still non existent as a production car)
- John Cooper Works version MCS, package to be available to existing MCS for upgrade, or complete car if you are in the UK.

obviously there are other upgraded cars from Hartge and Hamann...

Can you source us where you hear this "RS" model?

The RS "Rouse Sport" letters are owned by Ford.

Examples are

Ford escort mark 1 RS1800
Ford escort mark 1 RS2000
Ford escort mark 2 RS1800
Ford escort mark 2 RS2000
Ford escort mark 3 RS turbo
Ford escort mark 4 RS turbo
Ford fiesta RS turbo
Ford fiesta RS1800
Ford sierra RS cosworth
Ford sierra RS 500
Ford sierra sapphire RS cosworth

And finally we have the lastest edition

Ford Focus RS :)

Taking all this into account I dont think MINI will use the letters RS.

The guy who told you that must have been drunk - the same one who told me that Ford were bringing out a Focus M!!

As far as I know (from what I can cobble together from what I've been 'told' over time).

Alpina MINI. Rumour from the word go. Was a non starter. Even the magazines printed a kind of 'retraction' by saying it was 'cancelled'. To be honest, I VERY much doubt that was more than a pipe dream.

'M' Division MINI. They wont do it. BUT I have been told that M division have been playing with the MINI, but that's a world away from BMW actually branding the MINI with the BMW 'M'.. er, brand. (Too many brands there, sorry).

John Cooper Works. Endorsed, official, and resold via MINI Dealers, warranty in tact. I have it on several good words that this is the extend of BMW 'official' tuning for the Cooper and S.

Hate to point fingers, but a few people were telling me in the chat. They said it was going to come out sometime in 2003?

Aftermarket people might might make one, but MINI wont.

I thought RS = Rallye Sport

And not forgetting the Escort RS Cosworth... Always my dream car until I grew up...

I was alittle confused at first. I didn't think Mini would make a Cooper RS. Ok, thanks for the help guys! :D

It seems that the popular opinion is that the RS is a fairy tale. Well, Christal from MINI of Sterling announced a few weeks ago that the RS *would* be comming out with ~200 HP through intake, chip, exhaust, etc... This made it sound suspiciously like JCW MCS to me, BUT she said that there might be some RS-only colors, so I dunno.

From my experience, dealers say a lot, and a lot of what they say is true. Then there's the rest. ;)

We all know how many times members here tell the dealers how to order the cars and what options are available/will be available, I wouldn't hold your breath that's all.

I also heard Crystal from MINI of Sterling talk about a Cooper RS variant, in addition to Cabriolet and Clubman versions at the meet we had a few weeks ago. Don't know if she was referring to a JCW Cooper S or a separate model that will actually be called the Cooper RS.

If it becomes reality, my Cooper will be traded for the JCW/RS!! :D

Hey what the heck! Here's another one. How about the 1969 Chevy Camaro RS. Do you think we can cram that 350 cubic inch V8 under our bonnets? :D

I swear if you closely at that Porsche RS you can see a letter A in front of the R and an E after the S.....:D

Might be called RS in the US and JCW in the UK.....

Are there any Ford RS's in the US?

So the most power full Mini has 250bhp should be fun to drive. i wonder how long before this figure is bettered by a tuning company i recon 240bhp can be done now if you have the right parts and no nos does not count

I can imagine that BMW is planning to add a more powerful version to the MINI family, whatever Cooper RS or Cooper R or something totally different. But I would bet that it will not come out very soon since additional models are often used to keep up the production numbers. Right now they are struggling to satisfy the orders for the regular Cooper S.

Thank you Grinder, it was me who was talking to another MINI person in chat MM7.

Christal will either verify or not the rumor soon.

:D

I remember her mentioning the RS colors...

...and that it could all be a rumor...:p

Paul,

Christal, Manager of MINI of Sterling, here in VA would never say 'yes' unless she knows...that's why she has to substantiate the rumor, she's the best of the best!

Well, it's a growing rumour, but I still cant get any official information on anything called an RS, and certainly nothing about any different colors (seeing as MINI are limited in their production to 12 of those anyway).

Maybe it's a rebranded JCW or something? Maybe it's nothing... Washington Post has reported on it too.

Hmmmmmmm

Unfortunately the Focus RS will not make it to our shores. Although importing a German-spec model is an tempting thought
