Just got back from looking at the mini and the one nitpick I have is that the steering wheel is very cheap looking so I looked at one with the leather option it too was cheap looking didn't even feel like leather. The S had a nice leather cover but I'm not in the market for it. Are there good covers on the aftermarket that don't look like a cheap add on.

My first impression of the leather steering wheel was that it wasn't much different from the standard, but now I've been using it I love it. I'm really glad I specified it on my car.

I looked at a S model with cruise control and the leather was much better I'm not sure if it only comes with the S or if its because he opted for the cruise control that he received the better grade of leather

I have the leather steering wheel on my Cooper and like it. However, if you'd like something different try Newton Commercial. I believe they have some nice leather wheel options in addition to some really nice leather seat kits. I bought a complete interior from them when I restored my Triumph. They are a quality company that stands behind their products. As far as steering wheels, it's not like the old days when you could pull the wheel and replace it easily. Now you've got airbags to consider. Which is a good thing for safety but expensive to replace a steering wheel. I prefer a wood rimmed, 3 spoke wheel for a sporty look. However they have a nasty habit of splintering in your hands during a bad accident. So for now I'll choose safety over style!
