: My Mini in the Snow ruthie Apr 8th, 2003, 01:37 AM What should have been a 10 minute ride home from work, took over an hour in this BLASTED SNOW!! :( I passed two SUVs that had slid off the road. They detoured traffic onto the back roads and it was getting deep. My Mini was slipping quite a bit, especially going down hill (driving in 2nd gear all the way). My daffodils are up to their necks in the white stuff. :( Will this winter ever end?! MiniMan7 Apr 8th, 2003, 03:17 AM I know, just snowed alot more today!
I had the same kinda trip as you coming home from Toronto, SUV's in the ditch and all, it is really scary... one of those drives you can't wait to be home... glad you're ok! :D retroom Apr 8th, 2003, 01:23 PM Originally posted by ruthie

ruthie,
you need a set of winter tires if you drive a lot in the snow.

You are right. You know, I almost bought a set of snow tires at the beginning of the winter, but usually our winters here are milder than the one that came through this year. My mechanic told me that since we "bearly ever have snow" the tires that were on the Mini were new and had sufficient tread. Next year I intend to get them. :) ruthie Apr 8th, 2003, 07:59 PM Originally posted by MiniMan7

Do you have snow tires? If so, compared to summer tires, are they a rougher ride when the roads are dry? Just curious. Thanks. :) GordonD Apr 8th, 2003, 08:54 PM Originally posted by ruthie

Thanks. :) I have smaller wheels for my winter tires therefore higher sidewalls so the ride if actually better although noisier. HarryHBMCC Apr 8th, 2003, 09:48 PM My winter tires and summer tires are both 16" 195/55R16H. They feel pretty much the same when new. As the snows have worn they've become a bit less smooth so they are now noisier (now fairly noisy in fact) and the ride isn't as smooth as it once was (not as good on the recent ice either after having them on since late October).
I'm very glad I got snows this year, and I'm glad they're still on. We had much more snow than usual for some reason and its still coming down. Who knows what the weather will do next winter?
Harry Dark Silver S Apr 8th, 2003, 10:02 PM Had I gotten the performance tires, I would have had to spring for a set of wheels with Blizzteks or another winter-only tire. But, I have the Dunlop run-flats, and they actually perform pretty well in the snow. And, of course, on ice, even snow tires will slip.
To be truthful, I haven't had snow tires in years.
Do we get any snow in southern Wisconsin? How about four inches last night. Icy snow, too. Even my big van is spinning the rear wheels. | |
