I just did the 2nd brake light modification -- very cool.

But, when I went to test the brake light, I discovered that the lights only comes on when the ignition is turned on. Is this normal? On my other cars, the brake lights will illuminate without the key even in the ignition.

Happened to me. Makes sense, considering the issues with the fogs, the lights aren't active unless the computer is getting powered. Though certainly a MINI oddity.

More of a German car thing I think, all Volkswagens before about 1980 or so were set up the same way. Brake lights would only operate with the ignition on.

Kind of surprised the MINI does that too in 2003, I guess I just never noticed :)

More of a Mini heritage thing? All classic Minis need the ignition on before the brake lights work. So perhaps it's a combine MiNi/German car trait? :p

In the UK .

Light's only work with Ignition turned on .

This applies to all car's I have owned since Birth !.

I have encountered some Italian car's that have a facility to operate light's without the ignition turned on ! .

But why would you wan't that ! .

Unless your hobby is collecting ' Flat ' batteries ! .
