Racermini ducks and runs for cover..........:D :D KenL Aug 7th, 2003, 09:11 PM I've bought my last 2 cars new. The MINI was new for 2 reasons:
1) There's something special about having a new car.
2) When I bought mine the second hand ones they had (demonstrators) were more expensive than ordering new. evil-D Aug 7th, 2003, 09:20 PM I am new car person. Part of it I suppose is I am somewhat of a germaphobe. Additionally, I want my car to smell new, not of the stinky smoker who owned it before me. I know I lose 25% or more of its value the second I drive it off the dealr lot, but it is worth it to me. cooper4us Aug 7th, 2003, 09:41 PM I dislike buying used cars. Not knowing how the car was treated from new, really, really bothers me. cooper4us Aug 7th, 2003, 09:41 PM Oh and I have never bought an used car before, and doubt I ever will unless is a very special car like a classic Mini. dinlo Aug 7th, 2003, 09:56 PM I'm don't have a lot $$$, but I'm not a car guy, so I just don;t want to deal with car problem, that's why I always new car :p dinger Aug 7th, 2003, 09:57 PM Originally posted by evil-D

Well you wouldn't want Soggys car then.:p ;) MINImeat Aug 7th, 2003, 10:07 PM I buy very well built new cars and keep 'em at least 10 years so the only history is my history.
The only exception is when I'm buying a "classic" car owned by someone who loved it or if I'm forced to buy used to replace a wrecked car.
I don't agree with the logic of getting one-year-old cars after they've lost their initial value. Most people who own a car for just a year run it in the ground. Don't even get me started on rental cars for sale. Cat Aug 7th, 2003, 11:21 PM I've always been a used car person. This will be my first new car. I've done really well with my used cars. I had an '83 280zx for three years that was stolen and stripped for parts ::sob:: but the insurance company paid me the same amount I paid for it. Bwa hahahaha! The MINI and the Infiniti G35 are the only cars I'd consider buying new because to me they're worth every penny! Z1GZAG N Aug 8th, 2003, 12:03 AM Are you a Used Person or a New Person?
At 50 I've been used and abused! dcfkan Aug 8th, 2003, 12:03 AM I am superstitious and do not like second-hand anything - do not know where they have been and may bring bad aura along with them etc... :D
Only ever have 2 cars, both from new ;)

New Car... I usually kkep them a long time, 10+ years, I've found that in the end, its cheaper this way. The few used cars I've purchased have usually gone by the wayside after 3 or 4 years. still own a 1972 Dodge van, (new), 1993 Accord (new) 2002 MC (new)... guess which is my favorite? Jones Aug 8th, 2003, 08:40 AM I am a new person. I have had my brand new MCS (gallery) for about 10 months (ish) and have just sold it and now waiting for my next new MCS but this time with all the extras, the JCW Works kit and a truck load more attitude! NewOne Aug 8th, 2003, 09:30 AM Im a used person,I bought my Mini at 1 years old.
The dealers give you a BMW signed guarantee that the car was not stolen, damaged, and hpi checked. They also upgraded all parts to current specs ( seatbacks, steering column ).
The car cost £10,500 with cd boost and aircon ,salt pack so
i got my car spec free and I got a chrome exhaust trim free
(no alloys though) Humourl3ss Aug 8th, 2003, 11:09 AM I always buy new cars. I like warranties, I like to know that a car has been fastidiously maintained (which I invariably do), and frankly many of the cars I've purchased have held their value so well that I often have the last laugh on those who think they're getting a whopping bargain by purchasing used.
-CW Martin L Aug 8th, 2003, 11:13 AM When it comes to cars they have to be new ;)
Luckily I'm in the fortunate position to be able to afford new :)
With used cars apparently a very high percentage of them have a "questionable" history, even those bought through main dealers. The only way to avoid this is to buy brand new then you know for sure. snuffy Aug 8th, 2003, 11:17 AM Originally posted by racermini

Racermini ducks and runs for cover..........:D :D
i've been used many-a-time. ops I mean...
The Mini I'm getting in October will be brand new, my first new car.
My current car was bought second hand, a year old (the car had lost over £3000 from its original purchase price) and it had loads of history etc, but unfortuantly the car had cigarette burns in it (and hot rock burns! ) so I was dissapointed. Once I had the car for a while it was obvious it had been "ragged" before me as the brakes needed changing and there were a few niggles that ****ed me off.
Anyway, I thought well I know how I want to treat my car - I'll get a brand new one - mmmm the smell :p MiniMonkey Aug 8th, 2003, 11:32 AM I definitely prefer new.. I did look at the second hand market as usual and just found it incredibly difficult to find exactly what I wanted - I have generally found in the past when buying used cars that I have compromised in some way or another to save cash.
So my last 3 cars have been new with the Mini being the first to be exactly how I wanted it! MiniMinor Aug 9th, 2003, 10:57 AM Bought mine new. It was the first new car i had bought. BartMack Aug 9th, 2003, 12:10 PM Thought I would do a little list to find out.
With the latest Cooper it looks like half & half,
but I have definitely preferred the new ones to the junkers!
Beginning with my very first car in 1980:
1970 Dodge Duster- used, kept 3 months,
1980 Ford Fiesta - new, kept 2 years
1971 Fiat Spider - used, kept 1 year
1969 Fiat Spider - used, kept 1 year ::my favorite of all the junkers::
1969 VW Beetle - used, kept 1 year
1981 Ford Fiesta - used, kept 1 year
1972 VW Super Beetle - used, kept 1 year
1987 Ford EXP - new, kept 5 years
1992 Toyota Corolla - new, kept 8 years
2000 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 - new, still have
2003 MINI Cooper - new (CVT), kept 3 months
2003 MINI Cooper - new (5 spd), current
I would consider buying used if it were a very high-end car...
I would look for a vehicle that had been leased for 1-2 years,
because I think high-end leases are well taken care of.
I have no plans to do that though, I have the MINI I want! :silver: :) Z1GZAG N Aug 10th, 2003, 04:05 AM OK, if we're going to submit our lists, here's mine. 4 New cars and 30 used ones. Up until last year, I had pretty much decided I would probably never buy another new vehicle due to the cost. But, then the interest rates took a dive and $4,000.00 rebate changed my mind. Looking for a paticular model truck and color made buying used near impossible. 5% interest and the rebate made buying new a plus. As for the Mini, I had to order my MCS to get it the way I wanted. I never would have found a used one with the combo I have plus the price wouldn't have been much less than new.

Check it out, 34 cars and trucks and not one single Rice Burner! Dustikins Aug 10th, 2003, 06:41 PM My MINI is my 4th car. Two have been used and two new. I have to say I much prefer buying new than buying used. I was pretty lucky with my two used cars as my uncle found them for me (he, being a mechanic retired from Detroit Diesel knew how to look for cars). The first one had no problems whatsoever, but the second (a '89 conversion van) had lots of problems with the transmission and burned more oil than gasoline. My uncle fixed the transmission for me, but it still burned oil like crazy. Being a teenager/college kid, I couldn't really afford any better, but as soon as I graduated I bought new. I personally would rather pay car payments than repair bills and I like knowing what I'm getting (which I don't think you ever really do with a used car). lionofpurity Feb 17th, 2005, 10:27 PM I have always bought my car from a lease return.
One year old car for 5 or 6 thousand less beats new everytime.
I bought me mini 2 years 16000 miles for 6 grand less than new pocketrocketowner Feb 18th, 2005, 09:04 AM I don't really care.......horses for courses and the ole bank account determine what my deal is. Lately though.....mostly new ones. My Binmer bike was used, PKT RKT a demo, the A4 used, the AllRoad new, the F-350 new, the Smart new. Company cars are always new so that helps :D fred3 Feb 18th, 2005, 10:52 AM I've never owned a new car, I don't think I ever will. I love hunting out bargains. Racermini ducks and runs for cover..........:D :D
You only live once and why do it from the third class seats :-)? If I can't afford it I forgo owning it till I can. Patience is a virtue. I'd rather own one new thing than 10 used things.
Common sense isn't common anymore. :red: junglemonkey Feb 18th, 2005, 11:23 AM Mine is used but it was a grand total of 6 months old (4k miles) by the time we got it (4 when we bought it). It was also owned by an employee of the Mini Dealer we were buying it from and was VERY well taken care of you could see that. It was almost new, and had all the options we wanted (air con, CD player, the interior I liked, salt pack (needed the adjustable seat for my Gran who has two fake knees and threatens to sue me for damage every time she gets out the Mini LOL, as far as I'm concerned it's all in her head ;) ) It was 4 months old yes, but this car would have cost thousands more to order new, it was very well looked after and from someone reputable, and plus I would have had to wait an extra 5 months until the January build! That was not happening!
Plus I'm 17. Beggars can't be choosers. Lol. :p dansmini Feb 18th, 2005, 11:24 AM The MINI was my first new car. The MINI has so many different color options and other options, I would have never found what I was looking for in the used market. Call me picky and/or stubborn, but I know what I want and won't settle for anything else. wildchild jules Feb 18th, 2005, 11:28 AM When my MCs arrives on 1st March it will be my 4th new car. I have no problem with buying used but I do love the new car smell and being the first person to own the car. However, it does depend on your circumstances and if the choice was not have a mini or buy used, then I would definitely buy a used one. Who knows what I will buy after the MCS and whether it will be new or used! lespurgeon Feb 18th, 2005, 04:42 PM Never owned a new car before the MCS, but thing is when we put in our order last year, buying a used mINI would have cost us more here in the NW US. Thought about picking up a lease-return BMW 325 that we knew the previous driver of, but it had automatic, and it wasn't a MINI. I decided I'm not a BMW guy, despite driving the MINI. Lawrothegreat Feb 18th, 2005, 05:01 PM My mini is my second car, and my first new car. The decision for me was quite easy - just go around any dealer and find a used mini with the exact spec you want. Then look at the price - you save a 'bit'. I felt it made far more financial sense to buy a new mini for 2-3 years because of extremely low depreciation, the warranty period and the tlc pack, and roadside assistance. I'm sure if i did a cost analysis of owning a new one against a 1 year old one i'd probably save £600 a year or so - but its that piece of mind knowing theres no MOT or worn gearbox or worn clutch or worn catalyct converter that I need to worry about outside of the warranty. Oh yes and a new car smells nice. But I would always consider a used car if finances were a bit tighter. :D | |
