: How to remove driver knee bolster ? IceLink:iPod gdsgds Feb 15th, 2004, 07:07 PM I just got my MCS two days ago and wanted to install the IceLink:iPod kit. It looks quite easy and found some explanation on the Internet.
Problem : it looks that the knee bolster on my MCS is not anchored at the top and hinged on the bottom the way I saw on pictures in this forum (FAQ's). Here is what's explained :
Grab the top edge with both hands.
Pull down sharply keeping the pressure toward the direction of the door in order to prevent the bolster from scratching the downtube when it comes free.
Rotate downward and pull out.
This is totally impossible on with mine :
Looks like mine is screwed into the dashboard. Does anyone have an idea if I try to remove it wronf or if there has been recent mods on the knee bolster ? Of course, if I cannot remove this, I cannot extract the radio unit and thus I'm unable tu plug my IceLink.
Thanks for your help MiniDoug Feb 15th, 2004, 08:03 PM Can't think why it would be modified..... set the wheel to its highest and slip your fingers into the gap between the column and the bolster and pull down hard, first one side then the other.... it has got pop in fasteners at the top! gdsgds Feb 16th, 2004, 07:03 AM No really, I don't think this is going to work without breaking the plastic part. I mean if I pull it down harder than I do now I'll break the knee bolster. I'll see with my dealer if he can do it. mikeythemini Feb 16th, 2004, 07:11 AM Is it the bolster or shelf?
The shelf is screwed in, the bolster is not, latley they seem to be VERY tight.
Taking of the dash end panel and getting your hand in may help, O and get the interior of the car warm - makes the plastic less brittle
Mike gdsgds Feb 16th, 2004, 07:49 AM Mike, I'm a native french speaking so it's difficult to know what's the difference between a shelf and the bolster. But I found a picture. Here is the link :

This is what's installed on my car too.
I strongly hope you can help but as I said it looks that if I pull it down harder than I do now, it will break. MiniDoug Feb 16th, 2004, 11:33 AM That's the bolster.... just pull it hard.... there are two fasteners, one at each outer edge.... it is tight and requires a hefty pull to get it off! mikeythemini Feb 16th, 2004, 11:40 AM Agreed with Mini doug - IT IS VERY TIGHT gdsgds Feb 16th, 2004, 12:08 PM Thanks guys, I just tried again but it's really, really hard. Any idea on how I could ease the removal ? Any useful tools that could help ? I've real difficulties to put enough power when I pull it out (no good hand grip).
PS : now I understand why my wife doesn't want me to do home improvments by myself ;) cjay Feb 16th, 2004, 12:24 PM Thanks guys, I just tried again but it's really, really hard. Keep on pulling!!!
I have installed an ipod connection in my Cooper. Just when you think the bolster is going to break it will come off, they are tuff little suckers! Be careful if you get to carried away the cable for the light adjuster is not that long.
cjay. gdsgds Feb 16th, 2004, 01:23 PM Thanks guys, I've been able to remove the right side of the bolster. I need to eat more spinach tonight for the left part which is extremely hard to unlock. Anyway thanks for your help. MiniDoug Feb 16th, 2004, 03:57 PM You could try a large screwdriver which is well padded with cloth to lever it off..... take care though....
Maybe you just need to go to the gym :D | |
