I may be missing something here, but as someone else has already said, the new brochure for the facelifted Mini (UK) which has now been released quite clearly states that the CD Boost will play MP3's. Having studied the picture in the brochure compared with that for the 2004 model (sad I know, but whilst waiting for my car to be delivered I use the brochure as my Mini 'fix'), there is a very slight visual difference - the volume knob used to be smooth, but if you have a look at the new one, it's got grooves that match the Mini logo and manual A/C controls, which I think might point to the difference between the old and the new units. The convertible's that I've seen so far have all had the old volume knob, so I have a feeling that this may explain why they can't play MP3's.

Anyone able to confirm this?

Personally I think they can play MP3 but read mr BMW's thoughts and we'll all get confused again, get your dealer to confirm it will play MP3 then if it doesn't he'll have to give you a free upgrade to MP3 when it is available.

There are people who have got new cars playing MP3, I'm sure it will work, not too fussed anymore!!??

Daft though it may seem I think the picture in the 2005 brochure is of the OLD CD player not the new one.

When I had a look at the CD in a new 2005 MCS at my dealers on Saturday some of the buttons where in a different place (but can't remember which).

Can anyone with a new CD that plays MP3 post a picture for those of us who haven't got their cars yet?

"Radish" has posted a picture under a thread called MP3 Player - it is definitely a different player to the one in the 2005 brochure !

Mine plays MP3's, and it's the new look.

Works pretty well too!

Good to see some confirmation. The last car I tried it in at work was straight off the back of the delivery lorry and it appears that the head units need activating when the car gets PDI'd as the radio took my MP3 disc in with the power off and when trying to turn the radio on to eject it the radio wasn't working (or so I'm told, it was my colleague who tried it for me).

Basically, I'm waiting for the car to be PDI'd before I get my disc back! :D

Steve,

Apparently some cars are still arriving with the old players, looks like mini are cheating a bit.

If it doesnt play them ask for a replacement.

Exsctly, read one of my previous replies on this, BMW masically admit some cars will some don't at the mo.

As you said if yours doesn't once they become available make sure you get an MP3 installed!

I'm so bored of this thread!?

So theres a standard cd player and an OPTION for a mp3/cd player head unit? Before this I also thought that all 2005 models would be able to play mp3s =[

It's O.K., I work for a dealer and it's not my car . All I want is my disc back and the knowledge it does play O.K.

Can some who has working mp3 facelift model, tell me if it still has the AUX i/p socket on the back?
I,m looking for iPod connectivity (as if mp3's weren't enough?).

US model cars don't have WAVE/BOOST options. All CD's in US are BOOST ; threfore, all '05s should play the MP3s here.
On the Aux input - no idea, but I wonder if they changed the back to be identical to the BMWs so that their new BMW/iPOD link would work without having to change it? I have no idea if this is the case - just speculation.

Pleased to report that the car in question was in for PDI today - the head unit was enabled and it plays MP3's a treat. :) Oh, and I've got my disc back! ;)

It seems unlikely that BMW would engineer an interface for the IPOD for all its cars without making that interface standard on new head units. If an IPOD signal can get in, I assume there is a port that you can hook up an AUX input to. The real question is now "How many buyers will want a six-disc CD changer when the stock U.S. head unit will hold 12 CD's worth of music as MP3's?" Considering that if you value music enough to buy a CD changer, but are buying the Mini one, you probably bought the HK system. This means that the CD player is a klunky addition that sits vulnerable in the rear area. My 1998 New Beetle has a similar system, and even though I built a custom carpeted wood cover to disguise and protect it, I would never do it again. Just gets in the way too much! Before I would put a CD changer in an older Mini, I'd get an 05 head unit and play MP3's.

Could someone help. I'm just ordering an 05 model MCS. Read somewhere that the CD players in the new model will also be able to play MP3s! I've ordered the radio boost with single slot CD player. Will I have it or is it going to be a more expensive option??????

Just tested this, as I have only had the car a short while and have not tried. Plays great, no problem, no different than audio cd's.
