Could someone help. I'm just ordering an 05 model MCS. Read somewhere that the CD players in the new model will also be able to play MP3s! I've ordered the radio boost with single slot CD player. Will I have it or is it going to be a more expensive option?????? :confused:

I've been reading on this site and keep getting conflicting information. Some say yes some say no!

I asked my dealer who hadn't heard about it, he k-mailed (email to bmw folk) and the technical guys said no, then he was at a course in England for the launch of the convertible and he asked the BMW MINI trainer and he said yes the facelifted models CD Boost will play MP3, even said titles would work.

Saying that it is reported on this site that someone had tried an MP3 disc in a new convertible, which would seem to me the same headunits going into the facelifted hatchback and they said it didn't work? Perhaps they just put old HU into the convertible to get them released?

Think we'll just have to wait and see, I've ordered it with the understanding it will play MP3 so I'll be hoping for a refund on the CD Boost or a new updated HU free when they do (if they do) get MP3 factory CD Boosts working.

I realise this msg is quite confusing, I'm typing fast, hope you get the idea!?

My dealer said that it my cd player would be able to play MP3s, Also on the Mini.com/com website, it also states that the CD player will play MP3s. It says option because you need radio boost. I.e you cant play MP3s from CDs in a changer if you have the standard Wave unit fitted....

I did tell the dealer about this (his computer couldn't load flash in the showroom!) I don't see how a company as large as BMW could get this wrong!?

My dealer has tried it in his convertable, it works!

Next thing we need to know is max bit rate, any file naming / directory restrictions etc. :D

I agree entirely, i'm planning on burning a few cd's before i get the car.

I'm visiting the dealer tomorrow, will see if he knows any more or if he has a manual.

That just means you need to pay for the cd player & boost. I.e its not availbe with a wave headunit and a changer.

This just means that the CD player is an option not the ability to play MP3's
But please please can anyone with the new player look up in the manual what it will play! :eek:

Damn beat me to it!
The two demonstrator convertibles (first car to get the unit) would not play an MP3 CD when I tried :)

But it says the rockets are an option, even though these are free! - -so the only cost is the boost and then the cd player its self

My dealer told me that it would play Mp3s.... because I was just going to get the wave unit and then change it, but dont want to tear apart my baby when i get it. So i choose the CD Boost, on the understanding that it would take mp3s... Also in another thread a person with a convertable confirmed that their cd player plays MP3s :D

I can def. confirm that the CD Boost on my facelift MC (picked up at 2.30pm today - just got home - bl%dy fantastic!!!!!) DOES play MP3 - at the mo can't get the track name / artist to show but hey, so what.

Nice to hear after the two Convertibles I tried MP3 discs in wouldn't touch two discs that play fine in my Sony MP3 CD changer. I haven't seen a facelift come in yet but when I do I will be trying the disc(s) a third time.

How is your disc laid out? I assume it plays tracks in folders and not just the root?

Went to my dealer yesterday ( to look at a Hyper Blue MCS !) and asked about the MP3 player. He confirmed that it is only vehicles produced after 1 July. The player itself is slightly different from the pre July models.

So all facelift hardtops?

What's the probability of MP3 track details appearing on the Sat Nav screen ?

If not, then do you think there might be some clever aftermarket gizmo which could do it ?

Squirt, well that's one reason i'm happy not to have a release day car then!

We've had our first two tin top facelift cars come in, and it will be my mission to see if they play MP3's. :) Will post my findings.

PERHAPS THIS WILL HELP

I bluffed the BMW guy (see below) and he basically replied saying he didn't really know (tried to cover his back and the lack of communication/knowledge of the GB Mini Team!)

My new Cooper is due 9th AUg 2004, I believe it will have it in it (MP3) If not I will get a free upgrade when it is available as my dealer has told me it will be in my car (along with it saying so on mini.com) It says nowhere on mini.com that the MP3 compability is country specific!?

files will play in all of our vehicles, due to software related issues. This
is why on
my previous email I have advised that we do not recommend that this is done.

We accept that they may play on some cd players however. Until tests have
been fully carried out we are unable to advise further.

I have a 2005 model brochure in front of me and it says and I quote

"The Radio Boost CD's integrated CD system offers a variety of functions including automatic insert and eject. It can also play MP3 files from disc."

Anyone tried WMA?

MP3 is a file format, but also commonly used as a generic term for computer encoded music.

Anyone know if it's JUST MP3 ? And if so the Bitrate etc would be good.



My entire record collection is in WMA :(

He def knows it's the standard CD Boost, I'd explained that in previous emails, they don't seem to like you emailing, keep saying speak to dealer.

I like bugging them because of their lazy attitude! Also they don't know what they're talking about!!!

Okay, so I'm a newbie. What's the CD Boost? I just ordered the standard CD player. Do I need to add something extra to my order to play MP3s? Before reading this thread, I had thought that all 2005's would play MP3s.
