Hi all,

Have just bought and installed the new Tom Tom Go sat nav. If anyone is looking for an aftermarket Nav, then I would highly recommend it. Fantastic 3d screen, very simple to use and good price compared to others. Only slight downside is I wanted to install it to right of the driver but due to curve of the windscreen the suction cup wouldnt hold the mounting bracket. No getting lost now!!

Cheers

Hi Davislove,

Haven't been in the car to have a look, but its quite a compact unit so should fit in that location. Only prob is the unit is designed to fit in the cradle with the suction mount for the widscreen or a sticky mount pad for the dash. You attach the 12v power cable to the cradle and the Sat Nav unit can be clicked in and out of the cradle mound as and when
required. The unit will run on its own power with around 5 hour battery life. I think if you intend locating it under the toggle switches it would be too low down. I have mine on the top of the dash in the centre of the widscreen with the headunit angled towards the driver so its easy to glance at. think it would be a bit dangerous being that low down under the toggle switches. I have a top dash mat so the cable neatly goes under that behind the rev counter and then routed behind the bottom of the dash to the cigarette lighter socket so its totally hidden. I guess if you had the storage console fitted under the toggle switches you could fit it there and rely on the voice commands.

I think what swung it for me was the clarity of the 3D mapping and the choices for customising the display, for £444 I thought it was pretty good value.

Penguinblue,

Sounds like a very cool device . I was considering a nav system for my Palm Tungsten E, but this looks like a good all in one solution.

I hope you don't mind, but I've got a couple of questions...

1) Have you had a chance to test the battery life? Or is that 5 hour figure a manufacturers one?
2) Does it use a proprietary battery, or some kind of standard one (e.g. AA)?

Thanks,

Dave.

Sorry, supplemental question...

I see it has Points Of Interest, would it be possible to set if up to have a list of speed cameras, and alert you if you are approaching one?

Yes, you don't even have to pay for this. http://www.pocketgps.co.uk has the details.
I've just installed Tom Tom 3 and while it works well the instructions could be a bit more
helpful. I'm not sure how useful it is unless it is mounted next to the rev counter, I really
don't want to be looking down when approaching a difficult junction. The spoken
comands aren't accurate enough so you need visual confirmation. The suction device
included will pull your windscreen out if you try and remove it left set for maximum
suction! Unfortunately it's not long enough for the Mini so I am on the hunt for a fitting
that will hold it next to the rev counter. I deliberately took a couple of wrong turnings
trying it out on known routes and the speed of recalculating the route is amazing and
that's without trying to get you to do a u-turn if you miss a junction which the older
systems did. As I have a PDA with built in GPS there is an extension cable and
antenna to be installed higher in the car for stronger signals but mine has yet to be
installed as I've had no problems with signal strength. Early days but it looks a good
nav system so far.

I really like the GO, I think it's the best all-in-one out there. I was thinking of it, but too expensive to me so I went with tomotm nav. Here's mine:

Hi Dave.

The 5 hour battery life is what's quoted by the manufacturer, afraid I haven't had a chance to put it to the test as I've just plugged the unit straight into the cigarrette lighter socket. The kit comes with a mains charger if you want to recharge it up. To be honest I would imagine any battery life would be pretty limited without relying on the cars powersource. When you think of a mobile phone with colour screen etc, any juice in the battery is soon used up, so I would imagine the same would apply here also.

This is my first Sat Nav unit in any car and I haven't had a chance to compare the Tom Tom Go with any other makes, but all I can say is I'm well pleased with it upto now and would certainly recommend it for the spondoolies!

Cheers
