They look good - What's on the one on the right? Is something sprinkled across or is the mustard coarse?

Ohh...that's just some cayenne pepper I added.

Did you know?

July is National Hot Dog Month
An average American eats 60 hot dogs a year
In 1893, hot dogs became the standard cuisine for baseball games.
Controversial debate surrounds the creation of the hot dog. Who really created the first hot dog? Although the city of Frankfurt, Germany credits itself for the origin of the first frankfurter in 1852, some argue that Johann Georghehner, a butcher from Coburg, Germany created the first frankfurter in the 1600s.

In honor of Ed and the month of July, and several pilgrimages to Ted's in Buffalo (while thinking of Ted), I stumbled on Roadfood.com (http://www.roadfood.com/) last night. I did a search on here and didn't find it, so I'm posting what must be the motherlode of info on hot dog havens, bodacious burgers, fantastic fries, and delectable deserts (among other things). You can even join up and download the POIs to your GPS so you can find home-cooked greasy grub ready no matter where your Motoring takes you!

Ted's is the best! Did you know the hot sauce and onion ring batter used to be mixed in separate ingredient rooms so that no employee could learn the recipes?

I import Sahlen's hot dogs and Ted's hot sauce from Buffalo. Cook them over lump charcoal for the authentic flavor. I just wish I could duplicate the onion rings.

Made some for Ed once and he loved them.

Spent about an hour on the phone with Mart (Maxamama) last night. She has "Come to MAMA" on the calendar!

She still has all of Ed's stuff in the MINI.

Well, only because I read through this entire thread before posting, I DID actually know that about Ted's. Whoda thunk a hot dog place would have to be so secure that the employees couldn't know the recipes. Amazing!

Had I known how near and dear the Ted's sauce was to you, I would have brought you some (oh wait, we went to Ted's AFTER MOT). Oh, well, maybe for Come to MAMA. Remember, I had hoped to make it last year. Jill and I were thinking we'll need another trip to New England--too much to explore that we didn't have time for a couple weeks ago. Now when is CTM again??

We'll still be coming back to Buffalo occasionally to stock up on hot dogs, Scime's Italian sauage, Redlinski's kielbasa and liver sausage and (of course) Ted's hot sauce.

Come to MAMA VII will be the Saturday after Columbus Day, 10/17/09. Maison MAMA will be open for lodging as usual.

OK, this year I have no excuse (yet). And thanks for the offer of lodging. Letsee, can we bring our cats? That way we won't have to worry about leaving them with the cat-sitter (whom they don't show themselves to).

.........Kidding!

...............Really!

You can bring the cats. That way we won't see ours.

Today's cookout (well, christening party) featured Hummel's dogs. I was so excited, haven't had them in so long. They were the quality brand that I grew up with, and of course would always see their factory from the highway in new haven. Still yummy too! :)

Ahhh, you're too kind! I don't think we'll be bringing the cats. One of 'em could do it and be totally at ease. The other one though--he's a little weirdo. A lovable little weirdo, but a weirdo nonetheless.

By the way, a gent from one of the wineries we went to yesterday, upon seeing my 'Ted's' jacket that Jill doctored up for me / Ted, exclaimed "I would kill for Ted's about now'. We were over at one of the Keuka Lake wineries. Turns out he's from Buffalo but said he hadn't had a Ted's in about three years. I think he mighta been jonesing. Clearly he doesn't have a MINI or he'd know it's just a short adventure away to go get one (or more)...Poor guy; I almost went and got him an order!

It takes so little to make us happy, doesn't it? Glad they were as good as you remember!

Our 15-year-old orange tiger is a member of that club.

 Just found out that we're down to 6 Sahlen's dogs. Might have to schedule a border crossing and hit Albany to see if we can pick up some there.

Well, at 15, your cat has probably earned entry into the weirdo club. Callahan's always been that way, but to be fair, he was found out in the woods of Idaho. He was the only survivor among his littermates, who were out there with him. If Jill hadn't found him when she did, he probably wouldn't have survived another cold night.

On the hot dog front, Ted used to get her meds in hot dog 'coins'. If you're down to 6 total, cutting them into coins might make 'em last longer ('course Ted always got seconds so it's not a sure cure).

Essem natural casings are a somewhat acceptable substitution. Not enough garlic in them though.

Fortunately I have to hit Keeler by the end of the month before the warranty expires on the JCW.

Pearls are a good choice too - and now you can get them in local groceries instead of a wholesaler.
I'm having them now for brunch (back from Ireland and I can't quite give up my morning sausages yet)
