: HUDSON BAY or BUST Road Trip II 2/18-2/23 NHRef Jul 29th, 2004, 02:28 AM I've got snowshoes, just in case!
What an incredible idea! Can it really be done in 3 - 4 days?
My wife wants to go to San Diego to visit our youngest son during that week, but Hudson Bay in Winter by MINI ~ WOW!
Yes, I'll give this run SERIOUS consideration!
Definitely "Play On!" DUCTTAPE Jul 29th, 2004, 11:07 AM Can it really be done in 3 - 4 days?

62 hours, round trip from Rockland County. AND, I slept for about 8 hours on the side of the road in Val D'Or!
See the page on my site if you'd like more info, or, contact me!
DUCTTAPE DUCTTAPE Jul 29th, 2004, 12:57 PM I was going to send this out as bcc's to everyone interested, but I realized I have only about half of the email addy's. So, first, I would appreciate everyone who would like to stay in the loop emailing me: HudsonBay@DavidRose.us
Please mention in the subjectline: 'yes, I'm in', 'maybe' or 'you're all nuts and I just want to see how far along you actually make it before getting locked up'
One of the good things about planing a trip that is both 6 months away and only has a few biters so far is that it can be whatever the early hitters want.
My suggestions are leaving bright and early Friday morning. We would need several meeting points as so far we have Jersey, Hudson Valley, eastern NE and hopefully Southern Ontario. I guess the best 'last' hookup would be north of Montreal.
While I realize everyone has different time constraints, personally I'd like to leave to be home Tuesday night. Depending on the size (or not) we can have several different leaving times, if everyone is game. I image Monday night home is an option too.
I have identified the following needs we have so far:
Publicity
Creating excitement and getting people to join
Finding sponsors
Charity fundraising
web site?
liason with other groups?
Logistics
Hotels
Lists of recommended supplies, car stuff, etc where are the coffee stops, oh, and gas stations and food
T Shirts, car badges, decals, etc
Weather reports, research on what to expect at the time, etc
Routes
contacting locals, co-ordinating with activities person
Times
Activities
what to do when in Chisasabi
anything to do at the gold mines?
So far, I have the following people. If I have missed you pleasae, let me know and all of you, please, send me your email addys?

We should have a start point and a finish point where we all start from. Not everyone will want to start there or end there but it will make crossing into Canada easier of we are together (or get us stopped and inspected). If we get sponsorship it would be nice to hand them a photo of us all decked out at the start and a nice ragged one of us at the farthest point we can drive. When I get back from Germany next week I am thinking I can get into contact with the towns. That we we can see what they got to offer. Never hurts to let them know we are coming up and when.
I am excited about this. Hey maybe we should put a link in the Canada Thread, and get some of their people to join us north of the boarder.

Hey David, please put me down as a definite Maybe for now. I'll also shoot you an e-mail. BTW, the average January temp in Radisson is -11 F and there was no listing for February.

and -11 is fine. I was thinking it would be cold...
Winslow, can you calculate a point? I guess north of Montreal. However, I am sure people would want to hook up to get there with others.
We would need to coordinate the point with the calendar/clock! paddy Jul 29th, 2004, 11:18 PM Any idea of a real date???? OK, if you two make it this far north, I'll try to get my boss to let me out. I had to pitch a small fit to get the time off for MOT, but I can try.
Snow tires, hmm. I've been avoiding it up til now. Might have to think about it.
David, you can upgrade me to a maybe. (I think that's an upgrade!) minimidtown Jul 29th, 2004, 11:57 PM Yes, but just barely.... :D :green:

Practice, man, practice! And a sense of adventure. I like to think of it as yet another winter sport. The Continental all-seasons are pretty good. DUCTTAPE Jul 30th, 2004, 12:10 AM Any idea of a real date???? I might be talked out of going to the Dragon to do this ! ! !
1st things first. I LOVE your flag!
Now, I have pitched Friday, Feb 18, of the 3 day Presidents weekend and so far no one has said other wise. So, it's looking like that
Lastly, I did the Dragon. Yeah, yeah, after 20 minutes I had to slow down because I was getting as nauseus (sp) as the passenger got after 5 minutes.
And this is 381 km of great, long, FAST driving, and then the same back!
BTW Catherine, I upgraded you in my mind anyway.
:)

OK, David, if I've attained the 'upgrade of the mind' status, I have to break it to you- my name's really Cathleen.
I'm going to try not to take that phrase and run with it, but everyone else, feel free. minimidtown Jul 30th, 2004, 12:17 AM Lastly, I did the Dragon. Yeah, yeah, after 20 minutes I had to slow down because I was getting as nauseus (sp) as the passenger got after 5 minutes.

I am sorry. I know it began with a C, and, regardless of Cathleen, Catherine, Cathy, Cynthia or Constance, I like you anyway :) minimidtown Jul 30th, 2004, 12:21 AM OK, David, if I've attained the 'upgrade of the mind' status, I have to break it to you- my name's really Cathleen.

Not to worry, guys, my mother doesn't get it right either. She at least has the excuse of having 6 kids. I only have 1, and I don't get her name right some of the times. (It helps that she's been willing to answer to the dog's names over the years.)

I've never read it. Isn't there a whale in it? I've read more arcane things, like practiacally all of Thomas Hardy, and Trollope. But no Melville.

Anybody ever read any Farley Mowat? (ie 'Never Cry Wolf', biologist, funny guy.) He's Canadian, has written a few books about the Arctic. DUCTTAPE Jul 30th, 2004, 12:54 AM this would be a Jack London sort of trip....trying to get back on topic...or at least closer to it. ....
Ever read To Build a Fire ? Outrageous! If we fall through the ice and get all wet and try to start a fire and I look at MINI and it looks at me and telepathically says "No way Jay, you aren't cutting me open to get inside and stay warm", I won't read another book ever again

We won't...I did a fair amount of iceboating in NY/VT/NH ... on the shore of St James Bay we won't even know there is a shoreline - it will be just a bunch of snow - without fishing shacks... 11 Below, that is tee shirt weather in Maine. Anyway, yeah a good point would be on the NY ThruWay near Albany or in Albany itself. That way no one is lost and we have one point to start from. Getting lost in Northern Quebec would not be a plesant thing if you only speak english. You have I-90 and I-87 crossing each other, and if the group from down south comes up they can pick up I-87 from 81 North. How you get to 81 is up to you.
It is more fun if we go together as a team. Especially at the Boarder. I know I have problems entering in to Canada, I get hauled off every time. After 10 minutes I am cleared (hopefully now it is easier since I am not the Christopher Winslow they are looking for and have fixed it in their computer) and allowed on my way. This way we have our itinerary and where we are going mapped out and they can see that. With 5-10 of us it is easier for us than if we go alone, and that way we know if someone is stopped and deported at customs we can figure out why. Just make sure your car registration is up to date, your licence is not due to expire less than 6 months from the time your in Canada, and bring a valid passport (if you have one, makes getting into canada quicker). Also no plants, fire arms and smokes (stuff for you is ok). Also remember with Mad Cow in Western Canada, any meat you bring must be abandoned at the boarder (this goes both ways if I remember correctly), this includes cold cuts and lunch meats. (Can you tell I travel north of the boarder alot). French is not needed but it is good to learn a few things to say, and once you leave Montreal, English will be the Second Language, until you get to the Cree lands.
Coming back over to the US is just as fun as you have to prove to them you belong in the US. If you got a passport it shouldn't be a problem, and as long as the address on your car reg and licence match your good too.
That is all for now.
