Sure!

Someday I hope to get my crummy website updated with all of the finishes, more engraving pics, etc. etc. :(

is it possible to do part bead blast/part polished?

worried that we're going to do doug out of business, or drive him mad with incessant questions :o :D

That combo is too "touchy". I've done a couple blasted/brushed combos, though. That's not a problem.

Doug,

I'm really interested in the bead-blasted look, combined with the brass and copper pins:

how did you come up with that? Are there other types of materials you utilize that may offer different types of colors from the yellow/orange that brass and copper offer?

I lost most of my pics when my previous computer crapped out on me a couple months ago, but here are a few that I managed to recover, and a couple new ones.

The Frog and Yang are bead-blasted.
I simply take the completed knob and give it a light blast with glass beads in my sand-blasting cabinet, after engraving.
The finish can vary a bit, depending on the grit and condition of the beads.

Obviously, Hajime's is a combo polished/brushed.

if anyone has a pic of a bead blasted/brushed combo knob, i'd love to see it

Found a couple more bead-blasted pics, saved on another computer.

This knob was blasted with aluminum oxide instead of glass beads, giving it a bit of a "sparkle", when seen in the sunlight.

Honestly, I can't remember whether it was me or a customer, who came up with that idea.

I've tried to think of other materials with different colors, but I come up blank.

In case anyone is wondering about the quality of the Whalen, these are pix I took last year when I got mine which is polished. It's one of the most beautifully crafted pieces of my Cooper!

If you live in Minnesota, you can get this extra-special finish by bringing the knob inside the house on a cold day.

Are all the finishes and designs covered in the $130, or do they vary? I was thinking abt the one that is the skull with the gear pattern in it. Thanks!

For all those still sitting on the fence....

Let me mention that Doug was a great guy to deal with, that he does good work, and that more than a year after receiving my new knob I'm still utterly pleased with the product.

i'll be ordering, just deciding on the engraving (like everyone else probably)

a good tip for getting your old one off is to sit in the drivers seat, put it in 2nd gear, make sure your face isnt directly over the top of the gear lever & just give it a good old tug :p its on 2 sprung clips so you wont break anything. don't squeeze around the base (how pervy is this starting to sound) as you might stop the clips from releasing

when i get it off can i go straight back on or do you think it would be best to wait for the whalen to arrive so if something goes wrong i can just put the whalen on?

Nice!

Did you stick your tongue on it? :p

BTW. Lived in Duluth and St Paul as a kid.

For everyone else;

The Whalen pics thread (http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42882&highlight=whalen) will let everyone see many examples and design ideas.

I have a plain brushed knob. No fancy engraving back in the olden days  :D .
After 2 years it looks dam near new.
Get one ;)

yep it'll pop back on no problem, just make sure you push it all the way home so the clips re-engage. wouldn't want it coming off in your hand

I'm getting one as soon as I think up a design!!

Easier said than done...

If I can't think up one by next week, I'll just go with the mini wings standard design
