Wow, that's a new one! No comment on the optical quality of the mirror or the fact that it multiplies the angle and shaking of his hand...
No reason not to post what makes you see in here, I certainly have before.
Oh and I forgot I got lasered in CT on 84S just north of hartford on saturday. Of course traffic was only moving at 60mph at best. It was a camaro (that I know to look out for as CT has always used them for their few highway patrol vehicles), and unlike mass staties he was well trained and at least bracing the unit on his car door. This again verifies that 100% of CT police traps that I've seen in the past two years or so have been using lidar and not radar. And as usual my jammer went nuts, but not a peep from my windshield-mounted detector. snek Jul 3rd, 2006, 01:56 PM Starting this month, a new Connecticut law adds $10 to every ticket issued for speeding, failure to yield, making an illegal turn and dozens of other moving violations.
Then, four times each year, the judicial branch will forward those $10-per-ticket surcharges to the municipalities whose police department issued the citations.
Police and city leaders pushed lawmakers for years to share the bounty of traffic-ticket fines, which currently go into the state's accounts. jwardell Jul 3rd, 2006, 02:13 PM Sounds a bit more practical than our "head injury" surcharge. holdenontoit Jul 3rd, 2006, 08:57 PM caught a new twist in the war the other night : an unmarked chevy malibu* with the darkest tint I've ever seen and get this, LIVERY PLATES! yep, the guy several up from me was one of those twits that just has to go faster than the 4 lanes of bumper to bumper and is swerving around in all 4 to this end , when this stealth car swerves 4 lanes to litterally glue himself to this idiot .The guy totally took the bait and swerved 4 lanes to get away from the stealth guy and got royally had by all the blues concealed behind all the tint. My reaction at the time was: WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! livery plates! nice touch!
My passport 8500 started doing this self test over and over again and finally settled in to a message that it "requires service" so I'm flying blind till I can send it in and get it back.
*edit: may have been a chevy impala........... Voodoo Jul 3rd, 2006, 09:22 PM LV plates? You're killing me. I routinely check out the Fords that look like unmarked cars then fly past when I see they have livery plates. No more!
I'm starting a new thread to keep all the unmarked car types in one easy place.. please add to the list.
If my memory was better I'd have a lot to contribute now but will update later as I cruise along. holdenontoit Jul 3rd, 2006, 09:30 PM great idea! I'll be betting that Ivan has a few choice words of wisdom for such a thread. snek Jul 3rd, 2006, 09:49 PM yes I do: Go for it ;)
Back in the Jurassic period of the Internet (circa early to mid 90's) I was maintaining a listserv (remember those?) of speed trap spotters. If any of them saw something out there, as soon as possible he or she alerted all the other list members. At one time, there were hundreds of spotters around Boston.... Then the Web killed listserves. holdenontoit Jul 3rd, 2006, 09:57 PM long live speed trap spotters , I'm not only a member, I'm the president! Voodoo Jul 3rd, 2006, 09:58 PM I started the thread.. feel free to include speed traps too! Jock, please add your limo to the list! Voodoo Jul 3rd, 2006, 09:59 PM I'm still looking for the perfect Laser jammer :) Aqualung Jul 5th, 2006, 04:43 AM Wow, that's a new one! Saw this on the way down from MoT in New Hampster, just as you reach Nashua on Rte. 3 S....the mountie was parked in the breakdown lane, going w/ traffic (they're usually parked perpendicular to traffic to get a better visual). This one was using the side mirror to aim and 'hit' me...but I was only doing 62 as I had seen the brake lights. You guys are familiar w/ this site, speedtrap registry (http://www.speedtrap.org/) right? holdenontoit Jul 5th, 2006, 10:13 AM You guys are familiar w/ this site, speedtrap registry (http://www.speedtrap.org/) right?
the barracuda software blocker here at work blocked access to this site because it contained porn??????????? (and yet it lets me access this site....Go figure!) Voodoo Jul 5th, 2006, 10:41 AM I've seen the site, pretty cool. Love the listing in Nahant where the local leos flash their hi-beams to warn mototrists of the Statie's speed traps!
Now if there was a way to import all that data into our GPSs...! Pamlico Jul 5th, 2006, 11:27 AM Now if there was a way to import all that data into our GPSs...!
Depending upon the device you have it may be possible. If the location of the trap is fairly precise you can get the coordinates of the spot using, for example, Garmin's Map Source or Google Earth. The coordinates could then be entered into the GPS. The issue is how the system will handle the coordinates - will it merely announce you're approaching a destination or will it provide a more specific indication. I believe some of the newer devices will do just that.
In the UK where there are a number of fixed location speed cameras thera are databases of those locations that are available for uploading into the GPS. Voodoo Jul 5th, 2006, 11:33 AM I believe there are GPS's in the UK that notify you of speed-camera locations.. they have it almost down to a science there! Not sure if my own Garmin would announce a particular class of waypoint, but maybe a suggestion to the US developers is in order. Just tell them they can bill the feature as something to point out landmarks, etc. while traveling! Pamlico Jul 5th, 2006, 11:44 AM My Garmin SP2610 allows one to enter a boatload of locations, but won't announce them by classes - seems to be limited to either 'via point' or 'destination'.
Garmin keeps announcing new GPSs - I can't keep track of them all - but some of the newest ones may have this capability. They do have POI Loader software available on their website which allows custom POIs to be loaded onto the device, but I don't know if specialized announcements can be made from them. snek Jul 5th, 2006, 11:46 AM Also in Europe, motorists call up radio stations with locations of speed traps that particular morning and they becomes part of the morning traffic report. Pamlico Jul 5th, 2006, 11:50 AM Also in Europe, motorists call up radio stations with locations of speed traps that particular morning and they becomes part of the morning traffic report.
The local NPR station occasionally used to provide that information here (Rochester, NY) during the local AM news, but doesn't seem to any longer. snek Jul 5th, 2006, 11:52 AM Probably because they were threatened with losing their state funding... Pamlico Jul 5th, 2006, 12:06 PM Probably because they were threatened with losing their state funding...
Why am I not surprised????
As a follow-up to the GPS discussion above, I believe the Garmin Nuvi 350 / 360 units can use the POI Loader software and then give proximity alerts at the appropriate times. All that's needed is to determine the coordinates of the traps, which shouldn't be that difficult if the locations on the website are described precisly enough. jwardell Jul 14th, 2006, 07:31 PM Apparantly, MINI thought ahead about GP owners confronting the police more often than usual, and decided to trump the V1 with the latest in technology...

I sure hope Cop Control is retrofitable! Voodoo Jul 14th, 2006, 09:36 PM Cop Control.. will it need another toggle switch or be on full time?
Anyway driving up RT.95 north of Danvers, probably around Topsfield..
Statie was under the bridge in the middle of the highway, on the concrete slant. Haven't seen them do this in years! Funny thing is that he was perched way up high right against the columns of the bridge, which I've never seen.. usually they are down close to the road. With all the brush you still couldn't see him (or he see you. He was blasting radar right through the bushes!) holdenontoit Jul 14th, 2006, 09:59 PM they do this ALL the time on that section of that road.I always slow down on approach to each and every overpass, those bushes weren't planted there by accident. Voodoo Jul 14th, 2006, 10:17 PM I used to slow down as well but for some reason haven't seen them up on the slanted part recently. Still see them just past the bridges though.. time to change my driving behaviour again. I notice that I'm driving too slowly now :( holdenontoit Jul 15th, 2006, 12:10 AM the new behavior that irks me the most is the lurking at the very beginning of the long on ramps that are at every entrance on that stretch of road. there is no way you see them unless you look backwards as you pass and by then it's too late. Getting on 95 at Rt 113 (Storey Ave) in Newburyport every morning at 4:15 AM as I do, I really look forward to letting Zane stretch his legs a little on the long twisty on ramp, (you know" on ramps are foreplay"). One morning I rounded the corner and came really close to tail ending a LEO who was lurking as described above..........WITH HIS FREAKIN LIGHTS OFF!!!:aargh: :aargh: I jammed on my brakes and gave the guy all the high beams I had, and he begrudgingly got out of my way and we glared at each other as I passed.............Jeez what nerve.Probably didn't do myself any favors longterm, but I was steamed. I can just hear him mutter under his breath " just wait till I get you .................Later!"
 :hmph:  MCSDCWGP06 Jul 15th, 2006, 03:20 AM Can someone provide more info on the cop control option, me being a newbie n all. One of the most common ones for this is eastbound on the Mass Pike, in Weston right near the mountie barracks. There's an overpass and as you go under it on the right there's an access ramp, the mountie is usually up on the top of the overpass, out of sight when you're coming through but as you say, by the time you can see them, it's way too late, the cherries are a flashin' in your rear view. snek Jul 15th, 2006, 01:05 PM ...and as they sit there, obstructed by bushes and overpasses, they are checking off all the "visual estimate" boxes in their ticket books. holdenontoit Jul 15th, 2006, 02:05 PM Can someone provide more info on the cop control option, me being a newbie n all.
with a GP you're going to need it.Welcome to the insanity! I use an escort passport 8500 and it's not good enough to have prevented the $305 ticket I got........it didn't even go off! and the LEO had me going EXACTLY what I was going.
Rule of thumbs:
-if you're alone on the road..........speed limit.....period
-if someone passes you going a brazilian miles an hour.........BAIT!
-if that someone has ultra tinted windows..........LEO!
I think that we are all being given 5 over , at least this has been my experience, but the gorilla tactics currently being employed by our boys in blue really makes it nigh on to impossible to go fast without consequence.............bottom line? take it to the track where it belongs.
