I just got asked THIS (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1774824) on another forum. Seeing as working out the length of a piece of string was a bit harder than I thought, perhaps you guys can answer the original question for me?

:D
Well having driven a mk 4 Gti just after my MCS I would have to say no. The Gti was a nice car but it was stock and I found the suspension a bit rolly - very comfortable but cornering hard lacked the confidence that the MCS gives me. Also I found that the steering was no where near as direct (had to turn the wheel more than what I was used to in the MCS for a given corner). Admittedly my MCS is lowered with 18's but even so the car handled very tightly before those mods.

I would say that VW Ag would have had to tighten the mk 5 Gti up heaps - which is going to lose them customers who prefer the more comfortable ride. Don't think that will happen. Also the newer Golf shape has a bigger body with more cabin and less bonnet which will of course mean more metal higher up and therefore the centre of gravity will if anything be a little worse. I still reckon that the new mk5 Gti will be a very nice car and maybe have lots of poke, but won't have the same "connected" feel that you get with the MCS.

So ther you go - that's my 2 cents. :)

The Mk IV and Mk V GTI Golfs are not comparable at all Stu... It's widely acknowledged that the Golf IV GTI was crap, and the Golf V GTI is a different breed!

I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I reckon a 3dr Mk5 GTI in white looks tha business!

More here (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1655192).

Shame it appears Australia will only get the 5dr and no xenons!

Those wheels are disgusting, look like they might belong on a Ninja Mutant Beetle :p

You're right Liam, not my cup of tea at all, if I wanted something that looked like a Corolla I'd buy a Corolla :(

Yeah I agree, the wheels do suck pretty hard. But, lucky for us on the 8th day God created the BBS CH. He looked at this wheel and thought that it was good. :D

Don't doubt that for a minute Mister Tim - but even so you would have to admit that for the Mk5 Gti to feel as "connected" as the MCS, VW would have had to make some radical changes - something they are not traditionally renowned for. As I said the majority of the market are after ride comfort. This shows in the fact that even on the Mk4 Gti's the "Sports" seats offered on later versions are a much softer cushion than earlier ones. They put me in mind of seats in French cars - extremely comfortable but lacking the firm feel of seats like the MCS and the 78 911 SC I used to own. Not bagging VW cause I cut my teeth on old air-cooleds (still have a 56 Oval window beetle that is in process of transforming) love the marque. ;)

Im sure someone in Victoria has them on a mini!!

But all the texers say they dont make them in 4 stud... Anyone know of the CR/W MCS with these rims - I'm sure I saw a photos of it when it was at the 2003 Christmas party.

I think Sherman had the photo - maybe he or someone else can shed some light.

Have you driven one Lima? When did they get in the country?

No I haven't driven one, however, there are enough journos going nuts over the car for me to believe that the new GTI will go very close to being as much fun as a Cooper S. Sure, there will always be differences in a direct comparison between the two, and I'd expect it safe to assume the GTI will be the more "comfortable" car, but that doesn't mean it won't reward as a driving experience.

This is what Jeremy Clarkson had to say about the Mk5 GTI ... "If you want to save the world, buy one of these!"

5th Gear also named the new GTI their Car of the Year.

Here is a link to a review of the GTI v JCW MCS v Civic Type R v Megane 225...
http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=77765

While the GTI does finish 2nd behind the MINI it shows that it is not to be sneezed at. Remember also it was tested against a Works Cooper S.

My belief is the Mk5 will dump on the Mk4 from a very great height. ;)

Sandshoe, sandshoe hairy crotch (THX Todd) - The 911 was without a doubt a fun car to drive. Alas captain sensible took hold of me and convinced me to sell it as I had just put money down on my MCS. I can guarantee this though I WILL DEFINITELY be getting another as soon as I am able - maybe a smidge earlier model that I can then jam a 3.6 with later 6 speed box into. Anyone thats ever wanted know... "What are they like to drive and should I get one?" The only answer is: "Awsome fun to drive (the exhaust note rocks -even on standard) and definately try and get yourself a slice of CULT car".

Cheers. :D

Yeah yeah I'm with you Mister Liam - but having watched several top gear shows Mr. Clarkson has been to to completey **** bag one car in one show and then wax lyrically about it otherwise in another show. Basically he's a D**K and therefore anything he says is not to be used in serious consideration when making you're own conclusions.

There endeth the lesson. :D

so what's your guess on pricing of the new GTI when it arrives
6 spd
s/roof
metallic
leather

I'd say $55K before haggling...

what do you think ?

Fair call! :D However, the press reports from the UK are, generally speaking, glowing in regards to the GTI. So I'm holding out hope at this stage that they will be a tasty drive.

KGB, unconfirmed reports have a base Aus spec GTI priced like this...

Hi guys, got some early pricing on GTI today from dealer.
Base manual 4 door $39000
DSG $2300
Leather $3290
Roof $1890
Sat nav $2990
Metallic $690
Deal. Del $1495
Rego $498.10
Plus s/duty and gst
Thats $52153 plus stamp and gst
Looks like $55k loaded

So theoretically you could get away with under 45K driveaway for a nude GTI.

nude's too crude, need fruit....

6K on top of a 2.0FSI doesn't seem enough though....if it were a BMW group product....

Just so everyones clear - I don't hate the new Golf. In fact if I had one then I would not hesitate to individualise it a bit. Some pretty wild looking kits out there for them now - maybe not to everyones taste. Mmmmmm Carbon fibre splitter.
