: MARCH 2005 Group paulr Apr 7th, 2005, 03:57 PM So now that one of us has already taken delivery, some of you have already looked into insurance. I got a quote from Progressive for $ 840/6 mos living in Chicagoland. Anyone of you doing better? I have my other cars insured with AIG and last year they gave the best quote. Unfortunately I could not get an online offer tonight. Will try again in the next few days, for my MINI is still at sea.
Claudia, Try State Farm  We were quoted less than $500 for 6mo. Do you live in the city or the suburbs?
-paul Tazminia Apr 7th, 2005, 03:57 PM Well don't blame us New Yorkers. :p The Resolve is leaving here on time. It's staying an extra day in Baltimore. I guess the crew want to get some of those famous crab cakes. :)

That's a cruel post to put up just before lunch! Claudia Apr 7th, 2005, 03:59 PM So now that one of us has already taken delivery, some of you have already looked into insurance. I got an email offer today from AIG and they quoted $658/6 mos. I'm going to give them a call and see if they can do better, because I'm up for renewal for my other cars. I keep you posted. Tom B Apr 7th, 2005, 04:19 PM That's a cruel post to put up just before lunch!
What's the matter? Don't they have crab cakes in Illinois? :D
You won't get any sympathy from me, just had a peanut butter sandwich and a bottled water for lunch. :p
Tom Mk2 Colonial Viper Apr 7th, 2005, 04:40 PM My car is scheduled to arrive at Port Hueneme today. I called ASK-MINI to see if it would know whether it had arrived, and was told that it was "At the port awaiting a shipping vessel."

Me too! Me too! Thanks for the post Roger! :) I read it, called, and yes - there is change in the status. Yesterday the automated message was "in transit" but today it has changed to "at post awaiting a shipping vessel." I interpret that to mean at the port, being processed, waiting for a tractor/trailer transport to sunny Scottsdale! This is good news! OL still reads "enroute" w/ no date of delivery noted. Now what boat were our cars on? Thxs - Scott Ken30307 Apr 7th, 2005, 04:59 PM Well don't blame us New Yorkers. :p The Resolve is leaving here on time. It's staying an extra day in Baltimore. Well..that's not ENTIRELY true...the Resolve was supposed to get in and out of NYC on the 9th..now it's staying an extra day...maybe the MINIs wanted shore leave.

We were on the Bujin.
Now, hold your horses, first your MINI will be driven the couple of miles to the VDC in Oxnard, then it will be inspected and any damage that might have occurred during transit :( will be repaired. Once all of the quality checks are complete, your baby'll have to wait for a truck that's headed towards Scottsdale. Once it's at the dealer they'll most likely want a day to give it yet another bath and do some more quality checks, then you'll get THE CALL.
:D erickvonzipper Apr 7th, 2005, 05:21 PM I think only the "scheduled" maintenance is for free and MINI, I believe, schedules the oil changes every 10,000 miles. Some people just aren't comfortable with that . I think i'm one of them. ;)
Tom
Thanks, Pam and Tom. I am not comfortable with a 10k mile oil change interval, either. I do them at 3-4k in all my vehicles, and will in the MINI as well.

I know but ... This does change the schedule :) I assumed the MA was right, 4/10 projected at port (+ our estimation of being later) so this moves it up a little. I did check out the VDC link and that MINI w/ the crushed roof - while the probability is low of any one car having that kind of damage, do they have to tell you they rebuilt it at the port if they determine it meet their specs? I saw the 3% note, so that implies owner notification?
I'm not a "Q-tipper" (for those not in related car clubs that is a common term for an owner/collector who details their car - sometimes obsessively - for concours demonstration, points, awards, competition, etc.) but would like to know if there was extensive damage as anyone would ... Now I'm off to scan for info on the Bujin. Scott rsinsheimer Apr 7th, 2005, 07:03 PM The MINI that's not my MINI (see previous posts) is at the dealership.
 rsinsheimer Apr 7th, 2005, 07:17 PM I saw the 3% note, so that implies owner notification?
For those who haven't visited the links I posted a while back about what happens to your car at the VPC if it's found to be damaged, that's what Scott's asking about. At the VPC they have a body & frame shop that repairs cars to "BMW standards" and lots of spare parts to replace things that can get dinged or knocked off of your car on its way to you.
Since cars do get damaged in the holds of ships, or even in parking lots on their way to you, there's apparently some rule (Federal? Don't know) that if the car is damaged prior to delivery to the customer to such an extent where it would cost more than 3% of it's value to repair it, the customer is to be notified that the damage occurred, even if the car's already been repaired and the damage is no longer visible.
There's a picture of a poor MINI that had had its roof crushed in by the operator of one of MINI's transport trucks, and was being repaired at the VPC. I expect that that represented a lot more than the 3% damage level trigger that would require notification, but the (obvious) fear is that they might try to slide by on that -- how would you know about the damage if they did a decent job of repairing it and didn't choose to tell you?
I don't think that there's an answer to this -- to some extent ignorance can be bliss.
  ryanelp80 Apr 7th, 2005, 07:29 PM So, what date was your car shipped on? I believe mine was the 14th, so if that's true, then M<Y MINI must be on dry land now too, right?!?!?!? Oh JOY!!! I haven't been really active on this thread in the last couple of weeks just cause I didn't have a lot to say... it's such a tedious process to wait all this time for your MINI!!! Oh, but I know it will be worth it! This is going to be my very first brand new car... and what a car it will be :)

You should check with the automated ASK-MINI to see if the message about your car has also changed, but, yes, my car shipped out on the 14th as well, so you're probably at the port, if not the VDC!
There's apparently no webcam at Port Hueneme, so we'll have to be happy with these old pictures of the harbor and other people's MINIs.

Ignorance is bliss - yes, it might well prove to be true :)
I've seen (from the link) it called the Vehicle Distribution Center (VDC) but also referred to as VPC (vehicle processing center?) - Just curious if it's a typo, usage issue, two part of same process, etc.
FWIW -
bujin: (J) Military person: a warrior or soldier not specifically of the bushi or samurai class in Japan. See Bushi.
Bujin - A name for the martial arts expert. Translated as "military person" or "warrior person."

I just called ASKMINI (just to hear what they say after my Mini is released to the VPC) and it told me my Mini is at the port awaiting a vessel. :D
You don't suppose my Mini decided it wasn't ready to come over just yet and decided to go back home? btdoyle Apr 7th, 2005, 09:25 PM They don't say bujin ya know? They say wushen in madarin which pretty much means "military god" or "supernatural military". Maybe its cantonese? Just in case you were wondering. No I am not Chinese, I just speak the language.

The only rationale that I can come up with for their playing this particular message at this point is that it's the only thing they've recorded for the situation where it's at the port sitting in a parking lot waiting to be moved on to the next stage in the process. It should probably say something like "At the port, awaiting transportation", that way they could use the same message for both situations.
Presumably the next thing it'll say is that it's at the VPC/VDC. btdoyle Apr 7th, 2005, 11:24 PM So this it totally off topic but I just bought the most comfortable well designed sandals in the world after hearing 10s of 20s of people swear by them. the are chacos v/1's. Since NYK is a Japanese company, I'm fairly sure it's Japanese, but I know there's a lot of similarities between the two, especially as written in Kanji. Magictux Apr 7th, 2005, 11:48 PM Do you have an updated map of where your car is like you posted a while back for us? :)

Well mate,
it had a bit of problem... Magictux Apr 7th, 2005, 11:50 PM But the car was spotted somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. ...heading home! :D Magictux Apr 7th, 2005, 11:57 PM Here's the map... Due in Sydney 20th April.. I've been waiting since 23rd December BTW.. Longer than you Ben!

Hey rsinheimer, how is it you can track a mini that isn't yours? I am confused on that. What dealer are you going through? Kellzir Apr 8th, 2005, 12:37 AM At what point is people getting insurance? Especially when financing and going through a bank?
My mini should be at the dealership tomorrow, but I won't get it for another month, since it will be shipped to me. I went and got insurance today, to hurry up the process to deal with my loan and to pay the dealer. Now what should my effective date on the policy be? It is effective today, but I won't get the car for awhile. Also, my VIN was incorrect to the insurance company. So the agent put the wrong VIN # down, and told me to bring the car by when I get it to fix it on the policy. Has anyone experienced this? Also could I have my effective date changed to when I get my hands on the car? I don't know Japanese - only phrases from Styx (Domo ari gato Mr. Roboto :) ) and the errant phrase from repeated playing of Hayao Miyazaki's films for my children (Totoro, Castle in the Sky, etc.) w/ English subtitles. FWIW - When I ran the name through Google only Japanese translations popped up on the first page.
It's great to see the first arrivals and should be fun across the next couple weeks (Mick included :) - that's a looong trip.

USAA here - phone call from the dealer on the day of delivery to confirm insurance but they actually extend insurance on any vehicle, including a new one, for a couple days. I believe the dealer needs proof of insurance for financing so you may need to have in effect (paid) even though you don't have the vehicle in your possession. Effective date change? That'd probably be a carrier/underwriter decision and you'd need to contact them. VIN should be an easy fix, but FWIW, when I coordinated w/ NHSTA concerning air bag switch deactivation (no longer needed as out 05's have the new weight sensors in the seats), they couldn't recognize the VIN from the OL but it may take some time to be processed in the US.
For MINI advertisement enthusiasts - the 4/11 AUTOWEEK has the "counterfeit MINI" brochure/poster - it's fun. rsinsheimer Apr 8th, 2005, 01:28 AM Hey rsinheimer, how is it you can track a mini that isn't yours? I am confused on that. What dealer are you going through?
I know that looks odd, please see this old post for an explanation:

The car that's at the dealer is my dealer's first attempt, since I have the production number for it I can track it. If they'd gotten it right the first time, I'd be on my way to pick it up this weekend, instead it'll probably be (I hope) the 17th before I can get it. 10 LONG DAYS! Yoiks.
:(
The dealer (which otherwise has been just fine) is Desert MINI in Las Vegas. SteveR Apr 8th, 2005, 02:58 AM Well my Dark Silver Cooper S 6sp auto is almost ready to take home.
It should be at the dealer tomorrow 4/8.
Maybe a couple of days at the dealership, and to its new home on wednesday.
I really hope I get to have my first visit tomorrow.
Pics will be done.
