Yeah, I wont argue it, I just havent heard about it...

yup, the Marshall at Melbourne wasnt it - was killed by the stray wheel from Ralfs car from memory.

The wheel rope thing was introduced a few years back now - I think 98 after Mika Hakinen hit the wall at Melbourne in qualifying and his wheel struck him on the head... Micky may be able to tell you, but I think JV's car had the teater on it when it killed the marshall a few years ago, the impact tore it off.

There has been some discussion that the teather can actually cause harm to a driver when both wheels come off as it could fling back up into the cabin.

It is like a kevlar rope or some other sort of exotic material tightly woven... the rope connects to the brake set up on the car, generally if a wheel is torn off it will also take the brake - this was an issue eariler in the season when someones tyre came off?? Cant remember who, but the tyre rolled down the road...

Aaahhh Attached to the brakes.

I was thinking that they were attached to the wheel and was wondering how that didnt get twisted up?

just did a quick calc and it looks like on ave an f1 tire rotates approx 150,000 time for a 300km race cool

Thanks

FWIW the GP was advertised as starting at 11pm on RPM, or the V8s or whatever show was on Channel 10 in the afternoon.

Kimi, what happened, at least Mark was clever enough to have an early shower so he could beat the traffic on his way out. :p

Yeah, but all the papers and TV guides said 10.30

So Channel 10 know that BB will run late, they just don't bother to tell anyone else

from memory the tethers were introduced in about 98 or 99, after a marshall was killed at Monza, the tether failed in JV/RS's accident in melbourne, and the tyre went through one of the access holes in the fence (that was 2cm narrower than the tyre...)

thanks for clearing that up - it was the incident in Melbourne that had me confused.

Still the first time Ive noticed/heard of the tether system to be honest :o

another thing, I'm surprised the commentators didn't notice that the tyre didn't actually fail, it was the suspension that exploded from the vibrations. the tyre was still inflated and relatively intact.

on the topic of tyres & drivers, there was an indy race about 10 years ago where a tyre went flying and one of the drivers (possibly zanardi) had a big black skid mark on the top of his helmet....

Black skidmarks... must have been dehydrated

It was JV's tyre that went through the barrier at Melbourne. I remember seeing a thing on TV about it after the coronial inquest into the accident.
