Nick Fry admitted on ITV that a very quick decision was made when Button's engine caught fire... the decision was to tell Jenson to stop before the line, so that he didn't finish the race and would therefore not have to suffer a 10 place grid penalty at Imola for having a new engine...

But in doing this they gave up 3 points!!!

Hi,

That's interesting Scotty. The person making the call would have not been expecting it, and would have had around 5 secs max to make the call

How much is 3 points in the bag worth vs 10 places on the grid ??? Very tough call

Todays race was the best I've seen in a long time. Lot's of dramas with incidents etc. However, it was great to see people racing :D :D :D

There were probably more genuine overtaking moves today than in any entire season from 2003-2005 ;)

Cheers

What a day! I had a great hill I was sitting on, fantastic view, loved it.

Button.. that was just so nasty :( to be honest I don't know if he would have made it to fifth if he did keep going, so maybe its better that he did stop.

Webber... one day he will have a decent car behind him :D.

Montoya... spinning on the formation lap, what an embarressment.. they showed on the big screen a replay of a camera pointed at the Ferrari race director watching it happen, he burst out laughing... more importantly, what the hell was he doing passing under the safety car?!!

Its causing a stir, thats for sure :p the 10-places can be made up.. throwing 3 Championship Points out the window though.. not as easy to get back..

So many teams with cars capable of winning GP's. It could be an amazing season if these first 3 races are anything to go by

You probably witnessed the most action packed GP in the last 5 years - lucky buggers :p

I wondered about that at the time. I figured either the engine took out the gearbox and the whole thing ceased, or they deliberately chose not to finish. points in the bag. I can't beleive they would do that. Motor racing is not about grid position, its not about driving faster than anyone else, or winning races. Its about scoring more points than anyone else. simple as that.

That's probably one of the many reason's i'm not a formula one driver. if you told me to stop I'd tell you to stick it.

Only 1 team has won races this year though. ;)

And while the action was great in the lounge chair, really, without being in a corporate box able to listen to the TV commentary most of the punters at the track today would have NFI what happened. :p

I still don't know what happened in the 1987 Adelaide GP as the damn video didn't work properly and failed to record the race. :o :D

Sneaky move by Honda with Button too. Will be interesting to see how that decision stands the test over the course of the season. You only have to look at Fisi to see how the positions can be made up. He starts from pit lane, cops a roasting from his team for beng too slow, and still nabs 4th, ironically, thanks to the Honda team's decision to retire Button.

Great race though, highlight for me was Liuzzi taking Michael under brakes.

The cheer when the Ferrari's went off... brilliant :)

Massa, 2 Ferraris in two days... not a bad record.
Schui.... so glad that he took himself out, the snubby bugger can't blame anyone else but himself now

Unfortunately its likely a product of the two-race engine rule.. amazing that they'd choose saving a minor penalty over CP's tho.. its pretty incredible however you look at it..

And good work watching the GP, Matt. Keep this up and I may even have to watch some cricket! :p

that's his problem. he has plenty of decent cars behind him - for a little while.

Don't mind if Renault/FA run away with it this year - if we get the racing throughout the pack like we did today, it makes for exciting viewing  We hardly saw FA on the tele today :p

yup.. superb..

Drive of the day for me was JV though. 19th to 6th.

Kinda felt sorry for Massa in the race though..

I really hope he does well. I like him.

I notice he used the 'the atmosphere on the grid is so tense you could cut it with a cricket stump' bit :p

I liked the Keke Rosberg call too. Blast from the past - they must have slipped him into the seat during a pit stop or something :p

Schuey kill his car just up from us (actually went off next to mickyd) and Buttons car blew an afterburner flame right in front of us... must say that I reckon Fisi has the biggest onions in F1 to hang on bhind him while getting caned with smoke and flames!!

I had wondered a couple of times during the race where Micky was - and if he was close to any of 'the action'!! Sounds like he was! Can't wait to hear about his day at the track!!

I do remember being at the track you only really know what is happening within your vision, and if someone went off, you only found out when they didn't come around again!

Went to the first Adelaide GP with ex and brother & his now wife. We got there really early, were in General Admission. Got a good spot on a corner - but it got sooooo hot, that we were fading fast. We made the decision at 11.00am to get out of there and go home (only lived about 7 minutes out of the city), so we would be in time to watch the race on TV. The other 3 fell asleep from all the heat, so I ended up watching the race on my own!!

Thats another reason I was in an awesome spot - I had a superscreen on the other side of the track so I could see everything :D

The last one I went too was when I was pregnant with Liam (1990) - and we managed to score a spot in a corporate box - that was pretty cool :nice: We were on a corner where Ayrton had a huge spin out during practice on the Saturday. My heart was in my mouth for a few seconds, I can tell you!

The only problem we had with the GP being in Adelaide, was it became a complete nightmare to get to and from work for about a month before the event. We worked about a block away from the track and could hear them on practice days, which was fine by me :-D And the atmosphere in Adelaide was electric during the GP!
