This is my first post :)

I was wondering if it is possible to make a Mini One perform like a Cooper S i.e. Same Bhp. I'm thinking of getting one but I love modding so I would like to take the Mini One and give it a SC, air intake, new exhaust, BBK, coilovers and bodykit etc! Some other cosmetics aswell :)

But I need to know if the Cooper and One use the same engine? Is it just engine management software and can it be upgraded to make the cars perform the exact same?

Also, can anyone tell me the max size a mini will take in alloy wheels and max width. Rear and Front offsets would be useful also. Whats the clearence for a BBK?

A mini one can be modified to produce more power than a cooper and on to around 140bhp. Getting it up to 170bhp plus will be more tricky. Bolting on a turbo or supercharger would produce the power but this might break the gear box. There are far far more knowledgeable people on this forum than me-I hope they'll answer you! :)

Ah I see so the gearboxes on a ONE and a COOPER are different? Maybe its best to start with a cooper rather than a one?

Is there any hope for the MINI ONE D as I know diesel can be modified to give more power? However I'm not sure. It seems to be quite down on power at 75bhp with a 1.4 engine. Could this be modified to give 200+ bhp? Seems quite a way off but a twin turbo would come in useful and the amount of torque produced would make me smile :) Has anyone done anything like this? Will the gearbox handle it?

You are getting yourself all in a mess and confused:rolleyes:

a One and Cooper are basically the same under the bonnet, same engine, same gear box etc.. so a One can be made to go like a Cooper with no problem.

Where you won't be taking either of these models into Cooper S power, as the gear box is different, the engine has other differences such as the super charger etc...


I suggest you read a bit more about the differences between the models of MINI, then have a read about some of the conversions out there that have been done to Cooper's One's and MCS's, this will give you an idea of what is achievable.

But if you after power the easiest place to start is to order the MCS and not mess about with something you haven't even ordered yet, why not buy what you are looking to achieve and have it so it has warranty and TLC;)

cost of mods and risk of damage to car plus insurance cost with the mods, v's the resale value of a mod MINI and a MCS

doesn't really make sense unless you have bags of money to throw away;)

I understand what you are saying but I would prefer to mod it myself. I will be buying second hand also and using genuine mini parts. Thanks for all the help so far!

your already in engine and drive train forum, there will be threads about modding in here;)

If you are going to get power you are going to have to chip it, thats not going to be genuine MINI programming, and then with other aftermarket parts such as filter and exhaust you will get to about 140bhp tops. Start off with a MCS and £1500 for mods, you will then achieve your goal of 200bhp:)

If you like modding and its within budget you should buy the MINI with the most modifying potential, the S. You will see big power gains from the S for not much £. I dont think you realise how heavily you will have to modify a ONE to reach a true 170bhp (the N/A MINI engine hasn't got much potential) so it wouldn't be easy to turn it back to stock before you sell.

Well I've been doing some extensive reseach!!

Looks like I'll be going with the Cooper S! I can't really see much to mod on the engine apart from Chipping, exhaust and throttle body... It will still put a smile on my face :)

I'll mod the rest with coilovers, HRE wheels, BBK and some nice cosmetic mods.

theres loads you can do the the S more than the One's/Coop's.....have a quick look around the sponsors section for some ideas such as pulleys, exhausts, intakes, intercoolers etc

Pay attention to the weight of the wheels before you buy them, speaking from experience heavy wheels dont bear well on the mini! 18x7" rims with +45 offset and 215/35/18 tyres will fit easily without rubbing!

I only want HRE wheels!! :) I wonder if they make them that slim! (better check that one!)

No rubbing even with Eibach Sportline Springs or Coilovers?
