: Roll on roll off jetty destroyed at Southampton Mboy Jul 20th, 2005, 11:48 AM A search for "thisissouthampton" will get a uk site that has a story titled "Container ship demolishes port jetty as engine fails". (I couldn't get the URL to load)
Does anyone know if the information in the link above will have any impact on Wallenius Wilhelmsen shipping? Is there more than one facility for loading cars?
The Wallenius Wilhelmsen site shows my Mini is at Southampton as "Received at Terminal" on the 18th July. The Turandot is due to arrive and then sail for South Africa and Australia on the 22nd July. So obviously I wonder if the Mini will get on board the ship. :(
Thanks
Mboy.

A FULLY laden container ship demolished a jetty at Southampton docks after it lost engine power as it tried to berth.
The 107,000-ton Hapag Lloyd Savannah Express was attempting to moor at Southampton Container Terminals when investigators believe its engine cut out, allowing the prow to smash into the dockside.
The link span jetty, which was used for loading vehicles on to roll-on-roll-off ships, was destroyed.
Tugs raced from across the port to bring the vessel under control and berth it safely.
Nobody was injured in the incident, which also caused no pollution.
Eyewitness Colin Cooper, 51, was in his Marchwood flat, directly opposite the terminal.
"I heard this very loud dragging, scraping sound. Then I heard a metallic bang and ran to the balcony and saw it had gone nose first into the dock.
"There's no real damage to the ship but there's a big piece of the dock missing."
Deputy harbour master Mike Evans said: "Initial investigation seems to suggest an engine failure which prevented the vessel from checking its forward motion. Once a vessel loses its engines it's quite a problem."
Southampton docks are huge and busy, I'm sure they can cope with the loss of one of their ro-ro ramps. Mboy Jul 20th, 2005, 12:10 PM I hoped Southampton was a large port and it is good to hear from someone who would have a far better idea than myself.
Great, only 6 weeks to wait til the liitle guy arrives here.
Thanks,

Well there are 2 RO/RO points at the docks. The one in this story is up by the container terminal which really only handles Renaults and Fords (So many cars waiting to be shipped its unbelieveable!)
The MINI one I believe is further down by Mayflower Park, marked with a blue cross.:)
So I doubt no problems unless your planning on buying a Renault! :D
But Im pretty 99% sure that MINIs are down at the blue cross marked dock as thats where I've seen the WW ships before as Ive sailed out of Southampton.....;) Mboy Jul 21st, 2005, 11:52 PM Let the local help out here....

That is even better news, thanks for the pic.
A few days ago I started looking for web cams of Southampton and found the following link, before I read the story.
http://www.southamptonvts.co.uk/webcams.htm
Just checked it again and it looks intact. So maybe this is where the WW ships arrive as there are a few cars parked. Whatever; Mini2 is a brilliant site and I find it amazing to get such help. :D ururk Jul 21st, 2005, 11:55 PM I've been working on an Automator auto-download of the image file every minute. Heh. Almost complete.
I'm seriously hoping those are MINI's. Mboy Jul 22nd, 2005, 12:18 AM It would be pretty neat if they are Mini's.
Good luck trying to spot my car, CR MCSC, black bonnet stripes, driving lights. ururk Jul 22nd, 2005, 03:39 AM Heh. I have no clue what they are. But if a ship pulls up, at the same time the Undine is there, and these little cars start to move, sweet! If not, then I'll have a visual history of the shipping day. I'm at work now, doing work, and got it working with both Oceanweather, the radar, AND the webcam. I'm covered on all bases! ururk Jul 22nd, 2005, 04:03 AM I need to add a bit o'reality to the discussion, as the sky over there lightens up, that it appears to be far less cars than 600+ that are scheduled for the Undine. | |
