Sorry to hear that, what a t**t.

A funny story, a few years back i was in a mutli-story in LEatherhead, when a women hit a parked car and then quickly drove off. I noted her number and pushed the note through the tiny gap left, as the window was slightly down.

As I drove out I saw her parked up so left a note for her saying as she'd been in a rush I'd left a note on her behalf. :p

Would love to have seen her face .... :D :D :D

MrC phoned up the guy who surprise surprise didn't want to go through his Insurance, so we are getting Lucy fixed and presenting him with the bill!! :D

As others have said, don't trust him. Don't trust anyone. I mean it. When we were hit once and the other driver was obviously at fault, she did not want to go through insurance. We agreed, but only to get an estimate at the shop of our choice. We presented her with the estimate and she gave us the check based on that. Had she not ponied up the $$$, her insurance company (and ours) were going to be called. And we did not take a personal check. Certified funds.

By the way, she was our neighbor. Did not matter to me. It was just easier since I knew where she lived (and she knew she would see me everyday) :D

Yep, can't be too careful,

Few years ago, my 4 week old (new) Fiesta (sorry  ) was hit in a car park, had two witnesses, driver didn't stop. Police initially interested then refused to help, even though I had the guys name/address, proof he didn't registar the car in his name (traced to prev. owner), admission from two neighbours of his that he was uninsured.

Police are useless - I was even told that they didn't care that my car had been hit, I suggested that they may have been interested if he had hit me, but they said it wouldn't have made a difference as it was a private car park.

Note of advice. If you in the 'fairthrough' (ie. the bit you drive along, not the spaces) of a private car park (as I was) it apparently is covered under the highways act, so the police should investigate.

Oh well,

Martin

You have told your insurance Co.? Do not trust him an inch. Make sure your b-side has been covered 'cos pound to a penny, he'll deny all knowledge. So get your facts (photos, diagrams, witnesses) to your insurers just in case.

I second that advice..... Just to be on the safe side.

At least call the insurance co and tell them the situation. Make sure that they make a record of it, so you have something to fall back on, just in case.

I'd have to agree on the insurance front, I think you'll probably find a clause in your policy that states in the case of any claim (or in this case, potential claim) you need to notify them within a set period of time from the date of the incident.

Think it's normally about 14 or 28 days but if I was you I'd give them a call sooner rather than later in case the guy gets funny about paying...

As others have said, be very careful about this...the hassle of chasing him up if he refuses or disputes your cost could be a nightmare, especially since he's a model citizen

I would get a quote (or several), then get him to agree and pay up first before the work is done. That way you can still go through the insurance company if need be, since they can be quite strict about repairing cars according to their procedures.

Another up date
Hopefully the last.

I have just had a 'phone call from the guy's insurance company, regarding the accident saying that they accept liability! I should bl@@dy think so !!
Any way i said we have been in contact with Mr M and he dosen't want to go through his insurance . She said fine , but i made sure the call was being recorded and that i have a claim reference number just in case.

Why didn't he ring them back and tell them ???? Strange

Quick update; Thanks for the support guy's and girlies! Even tho i knew i was in the clear.

Don't do that, do it through insurance

I had a similar thing happen to me, and the guy just kept stalling and refused to pay when given the bill. Basically they figure out that you will probably not want the hassle of going to court to settle it.

I would never do it again, and will always claim through my insurance. What should I or you care if someone else loses their No Claims Bonus, particularly a d***head like him?

I would still claim it through his insurance, especially since they have acepted liability.

i think basicaly before he stopped to think about things , all he wanted was his OLD damage fixed at my expense. But realising he didn't have a leg to stand on made him think better of it. We are going to give him the benifit of the doubt, stop! don't shout :D
plus another phone call today! Like i said the insurance company are aware so my thoughts are its a "Win win" situation for me .

* completely lost track of what i wanted to say. The phone call is to say he has to give us the cash up front .

Hi Dawn

Glad to see you have a reference number for the insurance companies phone call - that could have been a spoof call from his mate buying time.

Years ago a guy smashed into my car and promised to pay up as it was his fault. I trusted him and when I got the quote (£1500) - he refused! Then he went missing from his address, I did not have his insurance details ( because he said he would pay himself ) and my solicitor said it was not worth trying to chase him as he if we did catch him he could plead poverty and just offer to pay £1 a week - make two payments and disapeer again.

So if you did get a phone call from his insurance - phone the company back and double check the details - you can't be too safe and he sounds like a slippery customer!

Dawn: have you told your insurance company? His doesn't have ANY interest in your loss: it represents his interests only. If he doesn't pay, you may be left adrift.

I hope it is hassle-free for you

My husband has decided to take over
He will ring the guy later and ask again what he wants to do. If he claims (which i doubt he will) the damage he says happened to his car when checked will NO WAY match with the height of my wheel arch.

its a shame when because of the society we live in, you can't trust people.
Maybe trusting him was just trying to restore my faith in human nature.

In my experience if he can't afford to repair his own car, he won't have the cash to repair yours either.

Best of luck

Nope, don't agree with you at all. Who has spare cash just "laying" around ? and thinks "yeah, ok , ill get my damaged car fixed". He saw or so he thought an opportunity to get his damage fixed at my expense.
he picked on the wrong person here. he has insurance, he can afford that , either way my car WILL be fixed. If he wont pay up then his insurance will , and lets hope he has Protected No Claims or it'll be an expensive lesson.

Hey Dawn!

looks like you have got all the angles (Angels?) covered and know what you are doing - good luck!

In my case I will always be suspicious when someone offers to pay and not go through insurace - I'll insist on getting the details first!
