Checkmate at Brisbane Motor Show

Just got home from the Brisbane Motor show as my only chance to checkout the new Checkmate and Park Lane.

I loved the Park Lane but noticed that the seats in the Checkmate were quite damaged from people getting in and out ie the light coloured material part of the seats were fraying and pilling on both the passenger and drivers seats.

I guess thats what thousands of bums going in and out will do and luckily not as bad as the Mitsubishi that we also sat in but still how long does a couple of weeks at a Motorshow equal in real time if everyone is thinking of buying one of the Checkmates that their seats may wear out???

We were worried about exactly that and ordered our Checkmate with black seats. A week of my enormous bum climbing in and out of the car is probably equivalent to about the same amount of time doing motor show duty.

What was the rest of the show like? I think I'll go during the week when the crowds will be quieter.

The real problem here is that everyone wants to sit in a MINI

The crowds were Ok as we were expecting big crowds since it was a rainy Sunday afternoon but not too bad.

Everyone wants to sit in a MINI but I even sat in a "wannabee" Suzuki Swift just to see how the other half lives. The salesman even had the hide to wink at me (with my husband standing right next to me!!). I told him is car was boring inside and he got in a huff and stalked off. Thought that would make your day Steve

Cool... what did he look like... I think we should all do the same when we go there. If enough of us do that he might change the white side

I saw a pink one today.. it was horrid. When I get to the show I'm going to open the door and jump up and down on the sill and see if it moves. My MINI is the only car I've ever been able to do that and not have it move :O

Wow, I never knew about "The sill test" Swamos. I am helping my mate shop for a new car at the moment and we have a test-drive of the Golf TDI arranged for tomorrow morning....I have put "the sill test" on the list! I'll let you know the results

...of course I am relying on the fact that clubMINI has a few solicitors as members incase the Golf fails "the sill test" and the plastic trim snaps in two

...of course on top of performing "the sill test" and telling them the interior is boring, I have just gotta find out why every Swift I see with "driver's edge" bonnet stripes are sporting them on the Passenger side of the car I probably shouldn't mention this on the forum, just incase a Swift driver reads it and tells all the others - 'cause i think they don't know Is it just me, or do other people find it funny to see a swift going past sporting "the Passengers Edge" stripes Mwhahahaha. Infact, I must ask the dealer how much the "passengers edge" stripes cost after I perform "The sill test"

Hi,

Even better than the sill test (but they probably won't let you do this )

Jack the car up from the side onto 2 wheels. In the mini you can actually jack from the rear onto 1 wheel, but not really recommended.

While the car is jacked up, open and close ever door, windor, bonnet etc etc. On the mini the all open and close normally, with apparrently normal clearances You can open all doors and bonnet at the same time That is an amazing testament to the stiffness of the chassis and inherent structural rigidity There are very few cars that can pass this test better, or as well as the mini

Warning : try this test on an Aussie falcondore taxi at your own risk Some of the panels will misalign by as much as an inch

Cheers

Robbo

PMSL, I remember jacking a car up once (can't remember which one at the moment - definately not the Mini), and not being able to close the door because of the flex in the body!!!

When I went to collect my Checkmate I noticed that there were like two frayed or broken threads in the back seat. They got me to bring it in 2 days later and they replaced the seats (from another Checkmate). I've had my car for 26 days now, 3800km and haven't noticed any problems with the threads in the driver seat.. yet.

I was driving around last night and for a moment - just a moment mind you - I almost remembered my destination. - It's all about the journey, not the destination.

Hey Robbo,

Interesting comment about Jacking up the car and being able to open/close doors - I never actually thought of that as a test for Chassis stiffness

I am still waiting for my GolfTDI test-drive as the dealer was a no-show for our pre-arranged demo today. Test-drive has now been moved to 9am tomorrow and the dealer has agreed to bring the car to our Workplace .... hence I will have a trolley jack handy when the dealer arrives

This guy is pretty confident that the Golf is the best car on the road (more or less told us this), so I will ask him if he would mind us jacking it up and performing the "Robbo Chassis Stiffness Test". I think he might just go for it, so i will be sure to let you know the results if it happens.

Yeah us Pirates were lucky enough to see Doug's Checkmate driving with us all day. Nice to see one on the road and not just in the showroom. Hope we have shamed u into washing it for next time Doug. LOL
