Thank Robo and Steve. I tried a bit of kero on a wheel this evening and it did come off fairly easily. Will have to take it easy with the tar on the pain as to not scratch it.
Another vote for mineral turps very gently wiped over the affected areas. Just make sure that you give it a good wash after doing this with warm soapy water, so the turps is washed away off the paint.
Sorry I missed sunday (probably good by the sounds of the gunk). I hadn't read my home email until sunday afternoon and saw the correspondence between all regarding that morning.
I'm quite confident that the next MINI will be better in many ways than the current ones. However I will never be another BMW guinea pig again It's just not worth it.
