Thanks also for stopping over when I gave you the phone call. The noise returned again when I got back to Brisbane and it only seems to pop up when I am doing a hard left turn (that entry ramp on to the motorway was where it was really really loud). It also did it going over a speed bump which was really really odd.

I had a closer look under the car to see if I could see any debris that could be causing rubbing as you suggested, but I couldnt find anything. I am going to have a look through the forums now to see if I can find anyone else who has had the same sound. After listening more closely it sounds like a higher pitched grinding sound. The other thing that I will check is probably the wheel nuts on both sides (along with the tyre pressure that may be low and causing the rubbing - even though I checked the tyre pressures yesterday...)

Anyone here had something like this before? The car was driving fine with no change in handling or power... thats what made it odd..

If you have a grinding noise check for rocks behind the brake backing plate. I had this once and it sounded like a bearing was grinding itself to death. I wouldn't be surprised if its a rock caught somewhere after we went down that goat track to have a second go at that one way bit.

Thanks Steve for for organising the day and scoring something out of the dealers for free

Credit to Gregg and Judy for the lead to Brisbane Mini firstly-
Secondly- Mini Traitor, leave him alone. He will hop into a 56 shortly and end the list.
Lee, Sounds a good as an excuse as i have ever hear to fit new brakes, 4 or 6 pots! Yay! I reckon its a rock lodged somewhere or the inner guard has shifted. Where theres a noise there is a mark. Especially since the noise happened over a speed bump. Incidentally was the speed bump an ORDI car?

It was a really well organised run - the most MINIs that I have seen on a run.

My front wheels are coming off tonight for a bit of a look see, Hopefully it is only a rock or something lodged and it isnt too much damage. Maybe its a good thing that I didnt order anything from Alta yet - I might need to add in something else to the order..
Steve - I know brakes are important, but I am looking at making the beast go faster first .
BTW - The speed bump was red and it had a very nice paint job. Even in the engine bay and boot sills!

Steve - looks like it was a rock caught up somewhere in the brakes that has now worked itself loose. Mid week I heard the noise again, and then it abrubtly stopped. This morning I went for a drive with my old man and we lifted the car to have a look underneath it - there was no rubbing marks so hopefully all is now good.

Have an awesome time at AMVIV - this forum will probably be quite over the next week or so while you are away :P

Thanks to everyone for their advice too - I am thinking that the one way downhill gravel road + MINI = trouble. Hopefully they seal that road because the drive up the other one way part was so fun!

Geoffrey (my Satnav) found an awesome road on Sunday that goes from Murwillumbah to Pottsville which has no speed limit and lots of lovely curvy bends.

I was thinking "wow, this would be fantastic in the MINI" when the lovely wide paved road gave way to a gravel goat track!! What sort of council only paves the road halfway and gets us all excited!!

Oh well, maybe we can drive the bitumen part, turn around and then come back as very, very cool road!!
