England Shipping mini from the UK.

hi , hopefully am on my way to Melbourne in a few months. i was wondering if it worth while shipping my mini over. has any one had any experience. does the car need any mods to be put on the road and what about insurance will it be more expensive if it is an import?

cheers for any help.

We do get a little supplementary australian manual - I can't recall exactly what's in it off the top of my head... maybe something about seatbelts and child restraints...

Also, Have you got your speedo in the center, or on your steering column?
There might be some issue with that, since you can't order a MINI here with center speedo and steering column tacho.

I don't know anything about the costs of importing cars into aus... I'm sure someone else around here does though.

I thought the ADR that prevented MINIs from being sold in Aus with centre speedos was abolished a year or two ago?

My dealer told me I couldn't have a centre speedo. And don't you need to have side pillar airbags here, there not standard in the UK.

Got an import approval for it? Checked out how much is freight yet and how long it takes? Are you coming here permanently?

MUST get import approval (look at all of the conditions and make sure you meet them) and as an private import you bypass a lot of the ADR rules (rules that the gov make cars meet beefore they can be sold or used in this country), only the basic safe ones are enforced.

Now with the speedo they may give you grief over the fact it is in MPH but not the location ie center of dash...... BMW can help you change your MINI to a KMH speedo if you want too/ or have too but make sure you get this done your end.... as BMW Australia is not that helpfull in the area of converting speedo around

As for insurance, you will need to check with the companies but as long as it is reg for on road use (to get this you need the import approval and make the changes required) and the fact it is 99% the same as every other MINI out here should mean you won't have a prob.

if this is a temp import through the reciprocal arrangements aus has with the UK (CARNET is the key word here) then it should be relatively easy to drive it on the roads legally... it's permanent import that makes it hard I think

Well if he's coming here for a holiday, it's quite easy - get the carnet (sp? passport for cars) and apply for the approval then ship it here. Takes 6 weeks though....something you wanna arrange well ahead of your travel I guess.

it'd want to be a long holiday for it to be worth it....
even if you were relocating permanently, it'd just about have to be easier (& possibly cheaper) to sell your car in the UK and get another one when you get here.

$2k each boat trip which means $4k down the drain and the maximum it's allowed to stay here as a temp import is on the day when its rego is due in the home country. $4k can hire Corolla or Getz for months

UK cars have the speedo's marked in MPH and KPH with MPH around the outside and KMH on the inside.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Yes I know, but the smart people in the RTA in NSW picked up on that fact. so the new law now states that if MPH and KMH are on the speedo.....KMH must be the larger of the two.... So if the MINI has to comply with ADR 18 it will need a KMH speedo or at very lest a new KMH dial face.

I was standing somewhere the other day in a carpark when a Honda Element cruised slowly past me. It had NSW plates, a South Carolina dealer's logo and not a hint of a sign about the LHD. If I had seen this thread before then, I could have asked these questions.

But you have to ask yourself, would you want to go on holidays without your MINI?

Good luck mate.
