Offline | Thanks for organising such a great day Vic. The Eastern Creek instructors were fantastic as usual. James is such a laugh ... in a good sort of way! Well done Andrew and Bob for taking out the top two places. I was really surprised to take out the best team competition and have to thank my partner Avril for her excellent driving skills. I did have two bites at the cherry though, since we had odd numbers and I was the lucky one who got placed in two teams (my other partner was Roz - thank you too!). Definitely a great day and I hope the event can continue in the future. What it takes is people willing to join in the fun, so I can only urge everyone here to have a go. You won't regret it! I managed to video all of my driving on the skidpan using my handicam rigged up on a tripod on the back seat. It's only analogue video and the colour isn't great, but it is still quite watchable. I'll have a go at converting to mpg for those who're interested in seeing it. |

Offline | What a brilliant day - and thank you to everyone who helped make it so much fun!! The instructors were great, and showed both patience and humour in spades James, John, Matt and Elena - thank you all so much. Vic, thanks again for organising this event, and stopping by - love your new ride - she is a beauty!!I am still in shock at winning the team event, and believe a lot of that was being lucky enough to be partnered with Bryan Thanks partner - no doubt will see you at the track again sometime Well done Andrew, a well deserved 1st place - (and talk about cool, calm and collected!!) and we all thought rather fitting that our "Oracle" took out the honours And what a way to spend your birthday! Way to go Bob and Bryan too, for taking their places on the podium. Never imagined I would have gotten as close as I did either ![]() If there was an award for "having the most fun, and to hell with the results" it would have been Tommy in 1st place, closely followed by Steve, John G and Maaaarrrrrrrk, all tying for 2nd place! Roz and Raoul both did well, and looked like they were having fun, as well as sharing a car And, ahem, ah, hate to admit it, but there was this little white car, that....ahem, well, let's just say, performed extremely well, and even (shock, horror) beat the MINIs in one aspect!! Now, as we didn't actually get this particular driver into a MINI for a comparison (kick myself for not thinking of this before and offering him a drive in Megan) we will have to wait for the next time to find out the REAL truth - was it the car, or the driver?? ![]() And, as a good carpenter never blames his tools, I think I worked out why I was doing such sucky handbrake turns - and next time I will try turning to the right and see what happens. Hopefully then, my right foot won't feel compelled to plant itself on both the brake and the accelerator at the same time!!! And on a positive note - whereas before I wondered how on earth I could manage to attempt the 'heel and toe' thing - at least I discovered that my feet are big enough to make it a possibility ![]() For anyone who hasn't done a day in the Skid Pan before, you just have to try it - you will learn so much, while having fun!! We have to do this again - soon!! Cheers Avril... |

Offline | What can I say but thanks to everyone for making it such a great day! ![]() As I mentioned on the day, I think the secret to success is practicing on all those roundabouts in Canberra That, plus following Lima around Brindy road umpty-nine times (Oh and lets not forget good old fluke and the power of the fluffy dice ). I really enjoyed myself and learnt a lot about the limits of the car.One interesting take-home for me was that, while the car is actually easier to balance on the limit without DSC on, DSC is one incredible safety feature and I will never buy a car without it again. This was most clearly demonstrated to me in the handbrake into the garage event when, due to brain fade, I forgot to turn DSC off (don't worry, this was before the competition started ). I was able to perform almost perfect sideways slides into the garage - no unwanted spinning no uncontrolled sliding out, the car just did exactly what I wanted it to Mini's are such a beautifully balanced car. They're so predictable at the limit - a little adjustment to the throttle and/or the steering wheel/brakes is all you need to get yourself back into line ![]() Oh and I tried the rear vision mirror positioning thing on the way home and, what do you know, they're right, it works and means you can see a car beside you without looking over your shoulder All in all a great day and I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about doing it ![]() PS, B2 is still in one piece ![]() Photos to follow shortly Jan 06 MCS Checkmate |
