just checked mine.... April 2005 build and it has been on the road for less than a year.
It was pretty wet and there are little bits of rust there.....
I wipe clean the door sill area too everytime after I wash the car....

I am taking mine in to Alto Artarmon on Wednesday, will let you know what happens.

Meanwhile, I am going to send a letter to BMW as a 'heads up' and a 'what do you plan to do' kinda thing. Will send details of any response to this thread.

I have...I should find out their response this week...

I think you could push this rust thing, I think it has longer-term coverage than just the normal warranty...

6 years perforation corrosion. 12 years from 05 on. I think this would be covered. I don't know how you'd fix it though. It's a **really** awkward place.

Bear in mind that sometimes the medicine can be worse that the illness. I can't wait to hear what an aussie dealership says about it

Suppose I better subscribe to this thread since I seem to have created it

I checked mine last week and it didn't have any but it was wet and I hadn't been near water for at least 6 days (ie the MINIkhana). I just got some old turtle wax and drizzled it over the area so it is now caked in the stuff. Hopefully this will help somewhat with repelling the water and creating a barrier especially the small gap between the panel joins. I guess the best thing to use would be the same body cavity wax that they use in the rest of the car but I don't really quite know where you would find it??

There are several types of this. Probably the easiest would be to buy a can of techtol R56 (or something like that) from Repco or supercheap. It has one of those little tubes for getting it into small places.. just ask and they will find it .

If you want to go all out there is stuff called lanotech that they get from squeezing sheep that is supposed to be the beez nees. It's available from bunnings , but coventry have the industrial grade.

Having worked for a manufacturer before, I almost feel sorry for the dealerships as they have to deal with manufacturer stuff ups, even when the manufacturer won't cop responsibility When resellers (or dealerships) approach the manufacturer with customer issues, they usually have it handed back to them to deal with, until the customer gets so ****ed off, that they contact the manufacturer directly.

So, based on that, I am writing directly to BMW, and informing them it appears to be a problem owners from all across the world have discovered - not just one region. They then need to kick it up to Head Office to come up with a solution.

If you take this issue to the dealership - don't shoot the messenger - ask them to escalate it to their contact at BMW - and when BMW start hearing from both customers AND dealers in numbers, they will have to do something. If you can get the dealer onside, they can act as your advocate - whereas if you get them offside, they aren't as keen to go into bat for you. (Believe me, having been on the customer service end of the phone, dealing with resellers, you can tell the difference!!)

And, no matter what year your MINI is, if you have the problem, and it is recorded as an issue by the dealership, you will always have recourse if it occurs again down the road.

As it is not a safety issue, I would think that if BMW Australia doesn't come to the party, the next step would be Dept of Fair Trading (which seem to be something of a toothless tiger ), not DOTARS. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Hi,

I've got an 08/02 build. Sorry to be a bit dumb but where exactly are we talking about? What rubber strip?

I'd be very wary of putting anything on there to try and treat rust that is already there - you may end up just sealing the water that is there already in place....

Rust on my driver's side door - bugger.

Let Peck&Stokes know, going in this week to show them - but still sucks... hopefully someone will let everyone else know soon what's to be done about it - would have to agree it's in a *really* akward spot.

With any rust, you have to ensure that the existing rust is completely removed, including a small area around it, to avoid the rust re-occurring. Single rust spores or microbes, or whatever they are, are invisible to the naked eye. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, it is definitely worth getting the dealer to look at it first.
