Australia New car, new owner, old model....

'lo all

Just thought I would write a short post now that I have taken delivery of my first ever Mini, and introduce myself.

I've just come over to Oz about 6 months ago and after kidding myself for 6 months that I could afford to buy a house, I have seen the reality of my situation and decided to buy something I can afford.... a Mini!

Rough Spec:-

New Mini Cooper S JCW(fac fit)
Chilli Red + White Roof
Chilli Pack
Xenons
I-Pod thingy
Recaros + heating
Lazy **** auto windscreen wipers
17" Bullet Wheels
Window Tint

I love cars but had never driven a new Mini before I came to Sydney. When I decided it was time to get a car (having just shortly been run over on my push bike, by one of the many “Sydney’s worse driver”), I test drove a GTI Man&DSG and was pretty convinced, although it only became fun in 2nd gear at 100kph+ which I get the feeling in Sydney is a quick and easy way to lose one's license. So while I was thinking about the GTI and walking home I happened upon a Mini dealership. Well "what the ****? I might as well ask for a test drive, but I bet it'll be bloody expensive over here" I thought to myself. Walked in and the dealer tossed me the keys to a MCS. 1 hour later, I was sold! I've never driven anything like it (go-karts excepted). Then the bombshell; that they had stopped production. This was a problem as I loved the MCS but wanted just a bit more power and had heard very good things about the JCW, so wanted one of those – and new JCW are even rarer.

Anyway, to cut a long story short after a few weeks of haggling, I took a display model for a pretty good discount. I've had it 3 days now and I am still in love.

Do the good times ever end?

Well, enough for now. Nice to meet you all, I have enjoyed what I've read here so far!

Nurton.

PS: I don't think I have ever joined a car forum before I've had a fault with a car and needed help. This is a first!
PPS: I guess I should join clubMINI now?

Thanks Guys and Gals,

It's nice to be Welcomed.

Regarding "the good times never ending", I do have one little problem. Unless I hit my drive entrance into my cul-de-sac at exactly the right angle the front scrapes. It seems to be the bit of plastic set a couple of inches back under the engine behind the front spoiler. Does anybody know what this is for? Is it some kind of aerodynamic splitter? It seems to have taken the punnishment OK so far with only a few scratches but I'm worried doing it every day might lead to problems. Do others have the same problem? I'm betting there isn't a solution, I'll just have to be very careful!

What's the deal with the Secret Santa? Can anybody come along. Even a pom? To be honest I'm still not sure about this whole 'Christmas in the summer' thing! Is there a date set yet? What is PITS?

Cheers

Noel.

I notice your forum is very PC... it wouldn't even let me write "lazy a r s e wipers". And here I was thinking Aussies were cool with language like that!
I will have to clean up my act!

Hey Nurton,

Welcome, you have a great car there.

clubMINI Christmas Gathering, Sunday 19th Nov
On Sunday 19th November we are having an early Christmas get together, this allows us to have a chance to catch up before the madness of December gets in the way.

Plan is to meet up at Rowland Reserve on Pittwater Road at Bayview (The site has ample parking on three sides of the grassed area, you are never more than 30 metres from your MINI (so you can blow it kisses throughout the day), it has great views up Broken Bay, free gas BBQ's and plenty of shade trees and sunny flat grass areas. There is a parking fee in the marked spaces approx $5 (the machine was not working last time Vic was there, maybe it will be the same in 3 weeks?) and there is free parking on the street directly in front of the reserve.

Plan is to meet up at 10am for a bring your own brunch/lunch.
Rather than do Christmas presents, Secret Santa or the likes the committee has thought that probably better to do a voluntary ‘entry fee’ for the day of $10 per car (or more if you feel generous) which will be donated by the club to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (more info at http://www.cysticfibrosis.org.au/nsw/).

1. No
2. Ditto. I'm not the sort to join forums either.
3. Yes.

Nothing drives like the mini. On paper its not as good as the others, but here we all are.

Welcome mate, and congrats on the car. Awesome spec.

Hi,

The part you are referring to is part of the underbody aerodynamic package. It particularily helps high speed and stability eg 150km ++

It will sound painful everytime you rub it, but it won't really do any harm to the car If it find it really bothersome, make a couple of thin wooden wedges to leave permanently on the entrance to your driveway

Cheers

Robbo

PS : BTW welcome

You don't want to hear the answer to that question...but let's just say that the weather had some influence in my decision to leave blighty for the southern hemisphere!

Clear skies down at the beach today, the MINI looked superb!

Thanks for the info on the aero lip. I have subsequently discovered that if I hit the ramp at the far left hand side it seems not to scrap, even though the whole ramp looks uniform.
And bizarrely it never scrapes when I go the other way! Explain that!

PS: Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to meeting some of you guys either at PITS or by joing clubMINI.

The gradient before the point where you scrape is probably different to the gradient after
