The issues appears to be if the tyre was run while flat. If you're confident that it hasn't been, and you're prepared to take the insurance risk then give it a go (if you can find someone to do it for you).

Another late response.

I had a Dunlop run-flat punctured and forked out $500 at the only local garage that dealt with run-flats (this is Bathurst after all). When they took the old one off there was a small nail right through the middle of the tire, well away from the side-walls. Even though they told me run-flats couldn't be repaired (as did BMW, no surprises there) they put glue on it and I took it as a spare. Subsequently I've replaced a tire with worn tread with that spare and done thousands of kilometers on it with no problems. I'd even been driving on it for a few days between getting the puncture and getting it repaired, albeit around town and with frequent pressure top-ups. I've also heard that Dunlop's are repairable but other bands are not. Presumably this is manufacturers recommendation rather than legislation.
