Repairing run flats in Aus?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has ever repaired a run-flat tyre before?

Found a screw/nail in my dad's runflats this arvo Took it along to BMW and they said you can't repair runflats, you have to replace them. Didn't believe them and went to Bob Jane and they said exactly the same thing. Their explanation was that there's no way of knowing how much damage has been done to the sidewall in runflats because they're so thick - and the only way to find out would be to dissect the tyre, and hence render the tyre useless... great.

BMW wanted $715! Bob Jane eased the pain by 60 dollars.

BMW did point out that the tyre does read in the print on the sidewall: "do not repair tire", but I've also read that some people have repaired runflats as long as the damage is not to the sidewall.

Would be great to get some insight from anyone who's had experience with fixing/replacing the runflats. Might be able to save some cash too!

Thanks

I was reading on here last night in a different section about how many people from the UK have repaired runflats... altho its not advised...people have done it and have raved about how the tyre has been as good as new...

If the world didn't suck we'd all fall off!

I've plugged a runflat. drove it another 30,000km without any issues.

I love Warsaw. Where else can you hug a pole?

If you have any information, any information at all, please contact me as I'm writing an encyclopaedia.

Can you fix this for me?

It's in the shed waiting. Less than 3k on it.

I had one plugged, it held up just as well as the other tyres including some long hard drives

The local dealer has repaired many runflats.
As long as the damage is not close to or on the sidewall and it has not been driven for a long distance while flat then it ought to be OK.

Really need to assess each case on its merits.

I have had runflats repaired on a 1 series as well as a MINI. Some places refused to repair them, others say that certain brands cannot be repaired, but I've always found one that is willing to do so.

Thanks guys.

Done the ring-a-round this morning and found out that it's illegal to repair Bridgestone RFTs, but some tyre dealers will repair goodyear/dunlop RFTs at their discretion (provided the tyre in question hasn't been driven too far/the tyre wasn't flat/the nail is sufficiently far away from the sidewall).

Bummer. Plus my dad is always one to err on the side of caution... so I guess it's off to the tyre shop!

Any chance of a pointer to which bit of legislation makes it illegal to repair a particular tyre?

I have had RE050 runflats repaired before, so keep persevering and you should be able to find a place that will repair them.

I had the same issue with my dunlop RFT when my Mini was only 3mths old! Bugger....

Then t'he man' plugged it with some tyre repair goo & told me to take the car for a few fast spins round the neighbourhood. good as gold. now nearly 30,000 k's on, still good. Phew. But its good to hear that some can't be repaired. Shall file that for future reference!

OK with my coop I replaced my run flats with normal tyres (best move I ever made) for a smoother ride. I then went to Repco in botany road and got the spray aerosol that seals leaks and a cigarette lighter tyre pump to make up my only mini mobility kit (for a lot less), coz I don't carry a spare. It fits nicely into the left hand panel in the boot.
HOWEVER, for repairing leaks on run flats which is illegal, there are many "dodgey" places that will do it cash no receipt. My run flats were repaired many times, no problems and drove them till they were bare then replaced em with standard tyres.
Princes hwy has a lot of questionable tyre shops that will repair run flats.

ps - if in doubt when looking for a tyre shop that will do a repair on a run flat and you're not sure if they would do it or not, just look for someone of middle eastern appearance, that's what I did.

Ummm... ok, after seeing this thread I felt a bit anxious about having my tyres replaced, so i emailed my local bobjane in Brisbane (Springwoord) and a guy emailed me back saying he could get me Bridgestone runflats in 1 day + fitting + alignment + balance for $370 each.... so I dunno what sort of dodgy brothers establishment they run in Sydney, but you shouldn't have to pay anywhere near $700 per tyre

My runflats have been repaired...

Not sure if the comments are worth anything now since it has been two months since the incidents but I have two of my runflats repaired.

It's a local tyre shop in Bulleen and the guy was very confident about it. He said there's really no reason why you can't and he's done it many times and nobody has ever went back with problems. And it's cheap, like ~$30 or there abouts.

Never saw this thread before.

But anyhow, I had my Runflat repaired and had no issues since.

I don't see there being a problem TBH, as said as long it is not in the sidewall, what difference does it make? I know the problem with depends if it has been driven on flat and damaged the sidewall and you wouldn't know and all that. But I have had no issues at all.

Would love to see this piece of legislation regarding the illegalness of repairing a particular brand/type of tyre.

OH MY OH MY! I own a Sidewalk!Almost.........

Australia

There seems to be some communication problems between tyre companies and retail outlets. I took my MCS back to Klosters in Newcastle and they pluged my Dunlop 9000 for $30. Some time later I got another puncture in a different tyre from a builders Tec screw. My local Bob Jane told me it was illeagle to repair run flats and a new tyre was $450. When I informed the manager that I had already had one tyre repaired by Klosters he told me he would have to report them for dangerous practices! Some further vigorous discussion the took place before he rang Dunlops who promptly informed him that their run flats could be repaired. It seems that some manufactures of these tyres allow repairs and others don't. This fact will determin who gets my trade when i do need new tyres. But ignorance in the tyre industryseems rife.

That wasn't a MINI tyre, was the 'ol man's BMW.

Best price was 650... but even still, very exorbitant!
