Blew up ECU

Well my ECU blew up on friday Not good at all. Dealer wants $2850 installed. So now I am wondering whether to go Motec or Stock. They cost about the same, just gotts see if it will work on my car first. What are people's thoughts on this?

Curious.... How did you "blow" it up?

3 seperate possible causes or all 3 at the same time

1..Plasma Booster (Ignition Amplifier)
2..Screamin Deamon 40 000V Ignition Coil Pack
3..Nology Hotwires

Any of these could have caused it or maybe none. But my guess is one did. So now I will be getting rid of all 3 and going back to stock Ignition Coil Pack. Throwing the Plasma Booster across the room and smashing it against the wall ( To relieve me of some anger and pain). Finally reverting back to Magnecor Plug Wires.

??? How can any of these fry the ECU? None of them provide power to the ECU so how could it have blown it?

Sorry, but this makes no sense to me.

What happened before the car died?

Well, the Plasma Booster is across the Ignition coil wires. If you get a back feed, it goes straight back down the line and it is fed straight off the ECU. The ECU controls everything. A short will blow anything apart. Fuse or No Fuse. I am a sparky so I now that stuff!! Learn from my mistake.

Sorry, I don't buy that and still makes no sense to me. That being said, I run stock coil pack and don't have the plasma booster (don't see the benefit of it) but it would be real hard for it to do and I am not certain that it is actually possible. Even if you did get an over voltage on the line, it is going to go the path of least resistance and that is out via a spark. I think that you are being fed a line buy the dealer personally.

All said and done, the car is out of warranty anyway and I am left with a dead ECU. They wouldn't warrant my car anyway, it practically has no BMW parts left in it!! So now I am just waiting to hear back if a Motec is compatible or not.

Replacing it physically with a replacement stock ECU is a 5 minute job - just clip out the old and in with the new.

Not sure if it then needs to be coded up to your car (the computers tend to have codes that are passed by the C-Bus to pass security checks before letting you do things like start the engine and turn on the stereo).

i removed my screamin deamon coil pack and nology hotwires too today. I had missing and backfiring under boost, even very low boost. Reverted to stock and its a wicked machine again, almost as wicked as my 1970 BRG cooper s!

Big problem here in Aus is so many people are buying the wrecks and rebuilding them. Very difficult to get wrecks here.

Brickworx have done well to get a surprising number of BMW Mini spares.
