Do Dealers Have A Clue?

I took my can in today to get the oil pressure checked out. I have a chrono pack and when the oil is up to temp and driving at 60kmh the oil pressure gauge used to be smack on half way. Now the car has done over 60k km and when the oil is up to temp and driving at 60kmh the oil pressure reads 3/8th. So the oil pressure has reduced by 1/8th. This is also reflected at idle, it now reads 1/8th when it used to read 1/4.

So anyway I take it to the dealer today to get it looked at as my extended warrant runs out in a few weeks. So guess what the dealer says. I don't have an oil pressure gauge, it is a boost gauge. How stupid are these people they don't know they own product. So now I have to find a pic of the chrono pack with labels to show the dealer. And the service rep fella said he had talked to the mechanics about it and they agreed its a boost gauge.

I have never been happy with the service at the dealers, it seams like I always have to take the car back twice before they will fix that is wrong and this crap just confirms to me that I don't want to buy another one.

Rant over.

Edit: title should be "Do Dealers Have A Clue" but I can't fix it.

All you needed to do was show them your manual.

The gauge goes up to 5 bar. Anyway I had to have a rant I was having a shocker of a day. I got there to pick the car up and the service rep apologised for telling me it was a boost gauge. But they said that the pressure level is ok. If the gauge is sort of accurate then 1/2 of the first line on the gauge would equal a bit over 9psi. The Bentley manual says that the minimum at idle is 3 psi.
At 3000rpm I am getting about 2.3 lines on the gauge which would equal about 43psi, Bentley says minimum should be 25psi.

So without plugging in a calibrated gauge it looks ok. Anyone have any ideas why it would reduce 1/8 of a segment on the gauge (about 9psi)? Could it be a faulty oil pump, I have heard they can wear.

Is anyone else getting pressure this low on the chrono gauge?

Cheers.

Come on Gary, Name & Shame. Which dealership told you this load of garbage?

It's good they eventually admitted their mistake, but really there's no excuse for such an ignorant and arrogant responce. You obviously told them that was the oil pressure gauge you were looking at and then the clowns wanted to argue with you

Hmmmm... I can see only 3 possible causes.

1. oil pump wear
2. change in oil/viscosity. How long since your oil change? Does it increase after a oil change?
3. one of the holes at the end of the oil galleries has gotten bigger That would result in lower pressure.

I rate 1 & 2 most likely. I wouldn't want to think about number 3. I think your chances of getting any significant action are snowflakes...

Re the last point.... buy an Audi They are cheaper and are made by competent people

Option 4, it's not a real oil pressure gauge, like the one in out MX5 that uses some mystical combination of revs and speed to simulate oil pressure

Is this true? I was hoping the dealer would actually put a real calibrated gauge on it but I guess I was just asking too much.

Greg, the "its a boost gauge" happened over the phone and I had to hang up before I called the service rep a moron. Oh and they are south of brissy but not GC

on the mx5 it's true, no idea about the mini. I don't have chrono on mine (it predates chrono).

The same southern dealer wanted to charge me $100 an hour to fix the dash rattle (that probably made me deaf) while the car was under warranty!

The service manager then said they would not fix it anyway because it would take to long and they did not have the time.

And people wonder why I stopped buying MINI's!
