Bit of nasty accident today cutting things a bit short. Hopefully Darren Berry will be okay.
Otherwise, a real bugger for MINI to lose their live race on such a big weekend. I've not seen the first two races, but it sounds like they were close and exciting.
Wow, did you see it on the flat bed as it was taken back into the pits?
Attacked by Jaws (of Life), they cut the whole roof back. Yikes. Hope he's alright.
Interesting. From what little I can see from the pic and the description of his injuries it looks like the wheel has come back against the wheel arch and crushed his ankle.
I've spoken to several CFS volunteers that have all told me it's one of the most common injuries in country crashes, and an ex-Speedway friend has told me that they often run the roll cage along the floor (under the pedal area) to try to stop the wheel coming back into your feet, and was surprised how many CAMS and FIA cages don't have that (Jap spec cages are even worse, where the front feet of the cage are maybe half a metre away from the pedals and offer no protection to your feet).
So (acknowledging I'm likely talking out of my backside here!) I'd say it's likely the cage didn't play a major role, and what we saw was the crash structure of the R56 MINI at work! (it's a strong little chassis).
Yep, know that scenario very well. Twenty years ago I had a head-on prang in my 1976 Leyland Mini. Apart from numerous broken bones and internal injuries, the accelerator pedal pierced through the side of my right ankle and embedded in my heel. For those who've never seen the original Mini accelerator pedal, it was a small steel plate about an inch square welded onto the end of a steel rod about half an inch in diameter. It had to be cut with boltcutters to get me out of the car, and was later removed in surgery. I still have the pedal as a souvenir keyring!
BTW, my Mini was in a damn sight worse state that the R56 that Darren Berry crashed in.
