Inaugural Melbourne Australia MINI drive day

Hi all. I know we have been talking about having a drive day organised for all MINI owners in Victoria for awhile now, so let's take advantage of the nice weather looming.

I am suggesting that we take on the beautiful scenic Great Ocean Road. Of course, I am open to any suggestions on how far down the GOR we should go, or indeed anywhere else that you guys prefer. I am also suggesting Sunday December 8th or 15th. Again, open to suggestions.

What I envisaged is that we will meet somewhere in Melbourne (maybe Todd Rd Shell Station off West Gate Freeway) at around 9.30, take a nice drive down and have lunch at say Apollo Bay. We will stop at Geelong to meet up with those in Geelong. This will give all of us to chance to meet the people we see here. Those who want to stay overnight can do so. I am trying to get my dealer to help us out in recruiting more people. However I first need confirmation on time and place.

What say you all??? Eltel, I believe you have a list of Aussie forum members? Maybe you can PM them about this little trip we are going to have.

i Just got back from taking my MCS camping in the Grampians. the run was great and the car finally has been "broken in". i'll look forward to a blast down the great ocean road. count me in.

also dont forget that geelong will be hosting the speed trials on the weekend of 16-17 November on the water front. there will be some exotic and historic cars racing along the forshore.

for more information go to
www.geelongspeedtrials.com

will post more pics later after i have managed to scrape the dead bugs off my windscreen.

Excellent. Looks like we have some interest. Let's set a date then. 15th December @ 9.30. What say we meet at Shell Service Station on Todd Rd (the Shell station outbound on Westgate Freeway). There are some parking outside KFC, and is a common meeting spot for car clubs. Any objections or suggestions? I will need one of you Geelong people to suggest where we meet with the Geelong crew.

Gripper, your car looks beatiful. Saw two others the same tonight. That combo sure is popular! As for the Geelong Speed Trials, looks interesting. Wouldn't mind going up if I have time next weekend. Next weekend is also the weekend for the 24hour Bathurst I think. Should be really interesting that one.

Eltel, that list looks like all Cooper S drivers. Any of the Coopers? I know one Cooper driver.

Spazz, hope you could come. I might finally get to meet you!!!

Sorry Dude, forgot about your Cooper. I think I saw you once. Black and white right?

I really like your idea. Great Alpine Road would be much less traffic than the ocean equivalent. I went to Hotham this year, and it would be a beautiful drive for our little MINIs. I really like the idea. Do others agree? GOR will be so crowded that time of the year that we wouldn't get much of a run. I've taken my Cooper S to Bright and it is a great drive, and up Hotham is even greater!

Also, if our Canberra and even Sydney people want to join us, it's not too far!

I need an opinion from yo uguys if we are still doing Great Ocean Road or are we turning our attention to the mountains??? I vote mountain, as there is much less traffic. I need confirmation, want to put a little leaflet together so that we can give it to the dealers and ask them to call up their clients!

WAY, I'd like to do the GAR as opposed to the GOR. Traffic will be lighter and the views will be fantastic.

Must be an early start though.

Where is west??? Sorry, not good with bearings.
If we go to to GAR and meet at say Carlton, the Geelong crew will have to travel a little further than the Eastern suburb people and Healesville, but not that much further right? The only way I know to get the Bright is through Hume Hwy. CoopeR, there is a long stretch of straight road, but once we get off that straight road it is a bliss!!!

Having checked out a few points, I am not convinced that a trip around the Great Alpine Road is a suitable Inaugural Drive.

Melb - Wangaratta - 3 hours
Wang - Bright - 1 hour
Bright - Omeo - 2 hours
Omeo - Bairnsdale 2 hours
Bairnsdale - Melb - 3 hours

That doesn't include stopping for lunch or to take in the magic sights. There are some beautiful towns and tourist spots along the way, would be a shame to burn past them.

I don't think that I can commmit to an 11-14 hour trip this close to Christmas. Perhaps in the New Year I might consider it.

The Geelong crew would have an additional 3 hours added on.

I'm more in favour of a day out where we can drive leisurely and stop for a long lunch and a wine.

Thoughts?

Healesville/Marysville drive

A few people are interested in a drive out to Marysville the long twisty way , this Sunday (17th) , lunch at Marysville bakery . It'll be about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Healesville , meeting there at 10.00am .
If anybody else is interested give me a call (0414 952 057) or send a PM . We've got 4 or 5 cars at this stage.

Sounds great Andy. This weekend is pretty busy, but I'll see if I can rearrange some work, and turn up for this one.

So we meet in Healesville at 10am and drive to Marysville for lunch? Some great roads in all those areas.

We've added a new colour combo to the group.

ok.. have thought about this...

its summer.

theres only one place to go in summer. and thats the beach. imagine 10+ mini cooper s/s's cruising into lorne in convoy... lunch in lorne... then continue on down the great ocean road after lunch heading towards Apollo Bay (where the better (read twistier) part of the road is anyway!)

just the damn traffic situation...

oh well.. i just love that road.. i've ridden it, driven it countless times..
