R56 clanking? Problem and fix?

Hi miniers,

I purchased an 07 R56 Cooper s with about 40,000km few weeks back. Recently noticed that are some clanking/tension noises coming form the passenger side front and back wheel/suspension area. Every time I move from still position or accelerate a bit, I can hear something like a rusted spring or similar. Could this be the control arm bush problem that a lot of ppl mentioned here? Its very annoying and I want to fix it.

Can anyone recommend me a place in Sydney for fixing it apart from the BMW service. Don't want to get ripped off by them and save some money.

Thanks guys.

That sounds alot more like the timing chain rattling.

Put in in neutral and rev to 2000rpm on cold. If it sounds like a tractor in the engine bay it the timing chain tensioner.

Thanks for the info. As a matter of fact, I think the previous owner just have the timing belt replaced. Maybe is not coming from there. That doesnt explain the rear issue. I hope is minor.......

Oh, sorry to hear yours was a lemon. Mine is R56 early model, but originally purchased in NSW and got about 40000km when I got it... so should not be yours~~~~

First step is:
Is the noise happening when you:
a) are stationary and revving the engine just a little bit?
b) actually start moving

Lol just realised that I have NO IDEA what side the timing chain is on so no point me speculating. There's an insanely long thread about a design fault with the chains. The chains themselves rarely need changing but the tensioners are pumped up with oil pressure rather than being spring loaded. So if your oil is bad, or the seals in the tensioner leak, the chain goes loose.

Crossing fingers its something cheap.

PS mine only has 3,500 km on it :P I should get out more.
