Offline | Some Advice Hi Callun, I'm glad you had a good time, sorry I had to split after brunch, I would have liked to go on the run. This is dangerous advice and I in know way am telling you to put yourself in masses of debt for a car. And I don't work for BMW or MINI, though sometimes I think I should. Have you got a good steady job with a future? do you still live at home? I know most 18 year olds don't have jobs that pay that well. If you do live at home it's easier to save money than when you're paying rent somewhere. Let you folks know about your savings goal and they should encourage and maybe even help you reach you goal, parents usually love taht kind of stuff, seeing their kids motivated and wanting to achieve things other kids their age don't. How many 18 year olds aspire to owning a $30,000 car? most are happy with ****** VN Commodores. You could probably get into a MINI Cooper for cheaper than you think, obviously you couldn't afford a Cooper S, but a demo Cooper? maybe if the price & finance is right. Try saving a deposit for 12 months, you should be able to save $50 per week that'll give you about $2,500. Then find a MINI Cooper demo at a good price should be around high 20's. You can finance through BMW at really good rates obviously subject to their approval process and put a balloon payment at the end of the contract and you could drive a MINI for less than you think. I was on Car Point using their calculator and came up with figures like this: Purchase Price = $28,000 (based on $30,000 less $2000 deposit) Interest Rate = 7.5% (I got my finance at 7.05% with BMW) Contract Length = 5 years Balloon Payment = $15,000 Monthly Payment = $354.24 that's $88.56 per week. These figures are of course indictative only. Two warnings though, 1: be careful of balloon payments. incase you don't know what a balloon payment is, it's a final lump sum payment on the loan. You can pay this in two ways 1: sell or trade in the car to pay the balloon, any excess funds gained from this transaction can go into your pocket or toward the new car. 2: If you really love your car and are happy to keep it for longer than the 5 year term of the loan, you can get another small personal loan from a bank or credit union to pay this balloon out, but then you'll be in debt all over again for a 5 year old car, to most people this is undesireable. It's worth noting that BMW are pretty good with their finance & Balloons, they won't generally over finance a car eg: put a bigger balloon on a car than is achievable via a sale at the end of the contract. Milage and the condition of the vehicle can affect the price achieved therefore affecting your ability to pay the balloon payment. 2: The second warning is to carefully consider the service costs of the MINI. It's not a cheap car car to service, I went for the 3x3x3 package and for and extra $1300 I got an extra 12months warranty (that's 3 years unlimited k's including roadside assist) and 3 years scheduled servicing. I incorporated that into my finance cost so for three years all I have to pay is my finance repayments, fuel, rego, insurance, tyres and brakes. I like this because a service can cost up to $500. I don't know about you but I never have $500 spare in my budget to cover a service that's for sure. Shop around for finance though. Credit Union Australia are pretty good and you can get up to a 7 year term, thus probably eliminating the need for a balloon payment and you should be happy with a MINI for 7 years. You'll stand a good chance of approval if you use an account with them to save the deposit as that shows a savings plan and financial discipline. I hope this info comes in handy Callun. The most important thing is to save as much of a deposit as you can, that'll be less for you to finance and pay interest on. It may be a little difficult to get finance at your age too, so when it comes to the time, don't be too ****ed at knockbacks, and be very careful of high interest rates. Cheers Mate and keep on dreaming and working towards that dream, you'll get there. Offline | Of course, you could always start with an original Cooper S which would run at between 12-20K.. saw a sweet John Cooper Works 1994 Cooper S BRG/White at a dealer here in Sydney for 17K (probably could have got it for under 16K with a haggle...) Looked so sweet i nearly bought it myself to park it next to my new one.... ![]() ![]() ![]() But welcome to the site and the Mini experience... there is usually a few spare seats on drives ![]() ![]() The original SWORKS |

| MINI2 Senior | I don't wanna pressure anyone to offer me rides, (especially if you don't know me), but if someone's offering a spare seat, I'm keen. I just don't want anyone to feel guilty about goin for a drive by themselves. They can often be a good learning experience - or you can go it as hard as you like without having to worry about the comfort/safety(especially) of a passenger Cheers, Jug |

Hey Boo I think you may have meant a 1964 or possibly 1974 MINI for sale, I don't beleive they produced a 1994 MINI, but then I may be wrong. ![]() 02 MCS gone after 2 years of fun and new friends, and 10 visits to the service dept at Brisbane BMW. Offline | WOW, I thought the last mini rolled out in something like 1980 or so...have you any links or pics of these models I'd be interested to see a 90's model mini to see the fit out etc. I guess it's like the VW Beetle in it's original format is still made and sold in Mexico, in fact it's a Taxi, the front passenger seat is removed totally and you just climb through to the back seat and your luggage sits in the empty space. Anyone for a bean burrito? 02 MCS gone after 2 years of fun and new friends, and 10 visits to the service dept at Brisbane BMW. You don't know the meaning of practical until you've owned a Camry! | MINI Traitor | Most of the new old minis (??) come from the Japanese market. The interior is horrible beyond belief, and most of them are automatics. Before we commited on our beast I went to some of the people out here who specialise in importing them. I had a drive, and I swear that ened the slighted incline required full throttle to negotiate. They were horrible. No competition to the new mini. However, if I were Callun I'd be looking for a classic mini that has had the cooper s upgrades (disc front and 1275 motor), or a clubman. Both of those cars are less than 5g, and if you look after them you can always get your money back. However, he has some quite adequate Toyota transport for the moment. ![]() Clubman less.... ![]() |

| MINI2 Senior | That I do! However, that belongs to my folks ![]() At one stage I thought that I'd never sell her, but now, most bets are off. However, I am in the market for a car around the 6K mark, and I have always rather fancied the old minis, especially the "station wagons" of the kind. It WILL be investigated. ![]() |

Offline | Hey JugMan, on the run on the 8th ( hope you`re coming!) Steve Young will be there, he is the president of the qld mini car club. I know he personally has about 5 classic minis, one rally spec that I am still trying to sweet talk him out of. I just spoke to him and he said he should be able to help you out, or put you in contact with someone who has one for sale. If you need to chat to me before then. PM me and I'll send you my mobile. Offline | The wagon is a ripper. When I worked my first season in the ski fields in 1988 my room mate had a mid 70's MINI wagon that he had restored and spec'd up to Cooper S level. The motor was tricked up to I don't know what and he had recaro seats in it the front. We used to squeeze 6 guys and our skis into that baby and do 100km/h + most of the way to Thredbo. It was a blast! One night he & I met a bunch of girls at a pub in Jindabyne and talked them into coming back to our place, all 5 of them piled in the back of the mini through the double doors and we where off until a copper pulled us over as we had a rear tyre that was apparently going flat. He pulled us over and commented on the MINI and how good it looked he said he'd give us a hand to change the tyre. He couldn't see the girls as the tint on the windows was very dark plus the were all frosted up and they were being very good & quiet. As he opened the back doors to get the jack he said "my my boys what have we here? Ok girls you can all get out and I'll drop you home in the troop carrier and you boys can stay here and change the tyre" THANKS COPPER! That could have been our lucky night! So yes callun the MINI wagons are tops, that little bit of extra room comes in handy. Cheers Jason 02 MCS gone after 2 years of fun and new friends, and 10 visits to the service dept at Brisbane BMW. | I am Jacks wasted life | make no mistake, i love classic mini's to death, i have a clubman i restored myself cant bare to part with it so its sat in the garage for the good part of 3 years. but one thing i can say from driving it every day for about 2 years before that.. they aint the best daily drive in the world ![]() fun for the odd weekend drive, but every day.. dont do it to yourself for the same sorta money u can buy a car more suited to every day driving WITH AIRCON (heidi's outside temp gauge read 45 today) obviously not anywhere near as fun to drive and no where near as much character.. but driving them everyday can be a trial , i wont even begin with every hassle my old mini gave me.. it'd turn into a multiple page afair ![]() |
