Scary thought. Just rough figures, please don't post to correct me.

I'd rather you didn't think of it like that. I think I'll be getting standard tyres and a 20$ compressor and a 10$ can of goop, and pocketing the other $970 I mean if they lasted a while it would be ok, but it looks like I'll be up for new ones at 25k.

That's "done" as in "almost worn out", not replaced.

Haven't made up my mind to replace 2 fronts with more run-flats or go 4 new tyres that give better grip for less money. But I need to make that decision pretty soon.

Suggestions/ideas/prices most welcome.

The problem for you Eltel is that your car is a daily driver, so you will be one of the first to need replacement tyres. That means that you'll pay full price. Once the volumes get up (16" are now standard on the Cooper) the price differential should drop from double at the moment to less than $100 per tyre (my guess) over normal tyres.

I have already decided to go the compressor and gue for my first set, and I may re-asses by the time the second set comes around. I'm not too worried about loosing the run-flats, as the MINI does have a tyre deflation indicator, which is a good thing. Also, if the tyre is damaged badly enough to be beyond gue'ing, you probably wouldn't want to drive on it if it was a runflat anyway. Let's be honest, MINI think it's good enough for Cooper owners, it should be good enough for us

My issue is that the tyres don't seem to last long. I rotate them every 5K, and I've done 17 now, and the first set probably only has 5-10k to live, tops. I'm starting to resign myself to this, as it seems to be the result of the floggings it gets on weekends. If the chunks hanging off the fronts after last weekends effort are anything to go by, I reckon I should bill clubMINI for the damage

Steve, I suppose it's the price we pay for having buckets of FUN.

I used ccsmini's mobility compressor to pump up some track tyres on Sunday and it worked remarkably well. I think it's relatively expensive, and there are comparable units at auto shops from $89. May not be as good, but should do the same thing. Only need to use it once every couple of years, if that.

Try Supercheap Auto mate. I'd be surprised if one of their compressors is more than $25

I bought one for $15 years ago and used it every weekend when i went flying for about 5 years. Probably not as good as the MINI one, but good enough.

Guys what you have to realise overall is that Tyre Technology is that good that you really dont need to waste money on Run flats. If you buy a high quality 205/45/17 or 215/40/17 you are getting the latest technology that incorporates near on 90% of the run flat technology. All 40 and 45 profile tyres that are made by reputable tyre companies are going to be very very very hard to deflate. Now if you go around hitting gutters or driving up gutters and creasing the side walls of any tyre they are going to fail. I have not had a flat in 7 years on any of my cars and the last one i had was from racing a rally car in the forrests of Canberra.
I dont see what all the fuss is about. I know the run flats give you that Miniscule bit of safety. But seriously think about it... if you went on a long trip or a tour You only have 80klms on the run flats if they go flat. Easier to pull over and call the Mini road side assist, or take another car on a long trip. The mini is specialised and we all know it.

I changed my first flat after 2,700km. The tyre was taken out by a nail that went through the side wall. If you don't already know, you can not repair the Run Flat tyres, so it was $620.00 to fix the flat and a tow truck to take my car back to the dealer. Next was a day wait to order and change the tyre. After asking my dealer what would I do if I was in Whoop Whoop! and about 500km from a tyre dealer, how the hell do I get home or help. His reply was, just go to a servo and borrow an other tyre and a rim to get you back to the next tyre dealer. "So what do I do with the MINI's Tyre & rim if the car is full of our gear". I guess you mite have a problem.

WHAT DA!!

Coop's.

PS: I now own a repair kit.

Go Coop's,
I would be utillising your MINI Roadside Assist. They will pick your car up, tow it to the dealer and accomodation or car hire will be organised, anywhere in Australia. Although the tyre isn't covered under warranty.

You should read the "MINI Roadside assistance" book you got on delivery of your MINI, it's quite impressive and covers you on anything, including flats and even "lockouts".

MINI Roadside Assist is only for the first 2 years of ownership, or 3 if you have taken out extended warranty.

Roadside Assist cannot be extended past your original agreement, so what happens on day 731 of ownership if you get a flat? I'd say don't bother ringing Roadside Assistance because you are not covered.

Bugger!

Run flat repair kits or something! should be supplied standard when you buy the car. Not as a option from the spare part counter @ BMW.

Lucky I've got the 3 year deal.

Coop's.

Found out some prices on run flats for people with 16” wheels.
(prices for supply of tire only)

Goodyear NCT $319 Run flat
Dunlop (back ordered to Nov) $275 Run flat

Good brand 205/45/16 about $220 Non Run flat.

The run flats were not as expenses as I though, but I am still considering putting on non Run flat tires for the price and comfort.
