The 17s on S-lites certainly sounded like a bargain when ordering the S, but I chose to go 16s to avoid having to sell a kidney (not my own, of course, probably one of the kids) when time came to change tyres.

However, I still don't know what 16s will cost to replace.
Anyone researched that part of the equation?

Before I bought the car I priced them, and they were $450. I was talking to someone on one of our runs, and they had priced them recently at $350. Sounds like Mr Jane is taking you for a ride, need for speed. Sounds like you need to do some ringing around.

BTW, did you rotate the tyres, or did you just leave them on the front??

Mate, last time I checked, there was only about $70 difference a tyre. I think in the long run that difference will continue to get smaller. Conventional tyres for the 17's are available for as little as $230.

The reason why I went for the 17's was because many MINI's are being sold on 17's (hence greater volumes), and if I do go away from runflats there were several other tyre options as it is a common upsize tyre, unlike the 16's.

Unfortunately, 195/55/16 is a VERY unusual size. Most people with cars that they want to upsize already have 195's or more on. The logical upsize for this tyre is a 185/65/15. Go on, name a car with that as standard fit. Have a look at the tyres sizes on Peogot's, for example. To fit a 16 to a peugot, they would have to go for a 195/45/16.

Anyone going to the trouble of going to that rim size wants at least 205. Unfortunately, for you to go to that you'd have to go to a 60 profile, which means you're getting out of good tyres. 195/55/16 is NOT a common upsize dimension

There is some hopeful news regarding the prices of run flats. One of the major reason runflats are not selling well it that they require a tire pressure sensor which added to the overall price of the runflat tires. By U.S. law, however, tire pressure monitors will be manditory in all US cars later this year. This is anticipated to cause a surge in the sales, and availabilty of runflats, as well as a decrease in the price. We can only hope.

Just out of interest, do the tyres fitted standard to the Cooper S (16") have silica in them? I had Goodyear tyres on my Astra with silica (SP Sport 200E I think) and I managed to get just over 50,000k out of them. I had the same tyres on my previous car but without silica and barely got 30,000 out of them.

Mate, I really don't know. But, I think that most good tyres now have silica in them. It improves the life of the tyre, as well as wet weather grip.

What about the wife?? Does she have a spare also.. I think the going price for a kidney is at least 5K so you might be able to upgrade to the works kit also

Not long to go now before you're part owner of two gorgeous kidneys yourself, Boo.

I was told that there a 3 diffrent runflats, good year pirelli and michelin depends on what you have on the car now, but hold off as my brother is in the process of buying a tyre franchise in Sale or taralgon

Woohoo! Dom's brother is going to get a significant portion of the east-coast MINI tyre business!

Woot - that's one of the most significant bits of news I've seen on this forum

And to think Sale is only about six hours from here....sounds like a good excuse for an outing.

I hope this is not too much offf-topic, but

Do you know if the 16" 5 stars that normally come on the Cooper are Run flats? I originally thought so, but now I'm not so sure.

Apologies to Aiden, but this is meant to be an Australian specific thread.

Unless I've missed something (and I may have, as I've not been here much lately), the rules were changed to allow country specific threads of all subjects to remain in their respective areas.

bugger this - I'm just going to buy conventional tyres... better grip, and I'll buy a goo kit that comes with a Cooper. Worst comes to worst, you can always ring BMW assist

Unhappy Cost of Run Flat Tyres in Australia

Has anyone changed a set of their run flats tyres yet?
What is the cost like? What I understand from one retailer is that its cost about $600 for each 17''. Mind you in he had none is stock and does not seem to be able to get any.

Just thinking, if you do 20,000 km a year and a set of tyres last you 40,000, then every 24 months you spend $2400. That means you are going through $100 worth of tyre each month.

Scary thought. Just rough figures, please don't post to correct me.
