Offline | Are you interested in socialising with other Victorian MINI owners? There has been lots of discussion at various state levels whether there is any interest in forming MINI clubs. Discussions have generally been about being independent or affliated with existing BMW/MINI clubs. I would like to go back one step in Victoria and establish what types of events Victorians in. Some events may force groups down the club path, whereas others done. From my limited exposure to clubs, people generally want to be a part of clubs for several reasons. For example: social events, interest in the marque, competition, restoration, buying advantages, etc. Note: as mentioned in other threads, there is a potential legal issue with large groups of people travelling in groups, and generally such legal issues are covered with club insurance. Look forward to your response. Chris |

Offline | Good one Chris. I urge all Victorians to respond to this poll so that you, and that means YOU can shape whatever the resulting MINI club looks like. Chris, Dom and I have started talking to BMW through the BMW Club Vic about their support and it would be great to say with some authority that there are 20 MINI owners out there who want to do such and such. I am interested in a regular drive with other MINI owners, hearing from people who have modified their car, going to motorsport days occasionally, and perhaps lending a hand, as well as doing some track work and learning how to drive better. Yeh, and getting some discounts for spare parts, etc. In other words making sure that I get a huge return on my $45,000, instead of letting it sit in a garage. Please get behind this and any other surveys. If you expect to go on another organised drive without some sort of club sanction and therefore insurance cover, then you'll have to organise it yourself. That's why it's important that we do something soon. Please respond and let others know what you want to do. Regards, ElTel |

| MINI Traitor | This thread is a great idea. If you are all prepared to meet somewhere (like a restraunt) then you really don't have any liability issues to worry about. The only thing to be aware of is that there are a lot MINI owners out there that either are not tech savy, or have just never stumbled across MINI2. If anything, it seems that MINI2 people are right at the far side of the enthusiasm bell curve ![]() Of course, if you never progress outside of MINI2, or arent pro-active in your stalking, you'll never meet up with these people. In our experience of "stalking" MINI's up here, it seems that probably 70% are actively keen to meet other MINI people. The other 30% don't care, but that is fine too. I think this is a real statement about the kind of people that buy MINIs ![]() Having said this, I can see real appeal to just keeping the group to a MINI2 type association. Unfortunately the Queensland group are so enthusiastic about our MINIs that we can't help recruiting MINIs when we see them. For this, we really need a club. Good luck with whatever decision you come to ![]() Clubman less.... ![]() |

Offline | I'd be interested in getting MINI involved with the BMW Car Club of Victoria. I have been along to a couple of drive days in a Cooper S with the BMWCCV & it would be great to see plenty more MINIs at these events. How many others are interested? (not a huge number judging by the poll results) |

Offline | Hi there DJP. I just spoke to ccsmini who also had just phoned you. I've vented my spleen here a few times about the need to establish an association that allows existing MINI owners to get together and also one that new MINI owners can be directed to if they want to get out and about with other MINI owners. I would have thought that BMW would have some sort of action plan about this subject, but to date I've not heard about their interest in helping us develop such an association. From time to time a number of drives have been organised via this forum, but in Victoria the most that we've ever had is seven MINIS. Based upon a certain amount of fear and unknown about litigation, I believe that all drives that involve large numbers of cars and especially new members need to be run under an association banner that indemnifies the organisers if a terrible accident occurs. Therefore the job of organising drives is currently shelved until such an association exists. There are three MINI2'ers who are members of the BMWVCC, that's me, ccsmini and ratboy. We've joined so that we can start developing a MINI association under the BMW umbrella. (Trying to start a stand alone MINI club with only a handful of members could be a lot of work, and could alienate certain types of people.) We did ask one of the senior members of BMWVCC to talk to BMW about our interest, but that was a month ago and we've heard nothing from either him or BMW. Your association with DMG is noted, and it is encouraging that someone from the dealer world is willing to assist (I acknowledge that some interstate dealers have also offered assistance for developing interstate clubs). What do we want from BMW/MINI? 1. Help us to form a MINI Register within the BMW Car Club umbrella. 2. Direct new and current owners to the MINI Register. (M owners get pushed towards the BMW Car Clubs automatically, don't they?) 3. Provide Driver Education days for MINI owners. M series drivers are catered for (although at a huge cost), so why cannot MINI owners get their own driver days? 4. Use the untapped enthusiasm of current owners to assist with MINI promotion. We want to tell the world about our love for our MINIs. Can we not try to get 40 MINIs in each state to drive around with some 'Italian Job' stickers on them? Ask us, I'm sure few people would say 'no'. 5. Provide a web site under BMW Car Clubs or MINI.com.au where all new and existing MINI owners can find relevant info about meetings, drives, driver training, track days, accessories, etc. 6. Understand that there is a MINI community out there; we need to be contacted as well as contactable, we need some outlet for our MINI passions, we're willing to help promote the MINI brand. 7. Why have BMW not driven something after 12 months in Australia? From the threads in here that relate to QLD, NSW, VIC and WA there have been discussions going on for months on this forum. We know that BMW related identities lurk in these forums. Their silence in this regard is worrying. Having said all that, we'd love to catch up sometime. We are having a social drive on Sunday, May 18th to welcome one of our oldest (i.e. longest serving) members from Brisbane, namely swamos and his lovely wife, who will be in Vic for a week or so around that time. Please join us (with partner and family) on the day, and any other MINI owners that you know about. We may need to know numbers, as we plan on lunching at the Portsea pub and ferrying across to Queenscliff. Currently 7 cars making the trip. Now if that isn't a great marketing opportunity!! ![]() Regards, ElTel Last edited by eltel : May 6th, 2003 at 11:02 AM. |

Offline | Re: Mini gathering/BMW car club Thanks for posting Peter. Let's hope that something develops quickly. In the meantime, check out the swamos drive on May 18 and let us know if you're interested. I'd be keen to hear your views on what a MINI club should be about compared to the other clubs that you belong to. Did you vote in the poll? Regards, ElTel |

Offline | Eltel, 1. MINI owners are welcome to join the BMWCCV (as you have done), I think the first aim should be to get as many MINI owners to join the BMWCCV. CCSMINI mentioned that 20 members are required to start a new wing of BMWCCV, so once there are 20+ MINI members of BMWCCV, then progress can be made to develop the MINI section. 2. Not sure how much 'direction' M Owners receive to join BMWCCV - but DMG can point new MINI owners in the direction of BMWCCV/MINICCV. 3. I think MINI owners can be involved in BMW driver education days already. BMW/MINI Australia may consider special MINI driver education days in the future - but require large amounts of interest for a day to be cost effective for everybody involved. 4. There will be significant promotion for the Italian Job, watch this space. 5. A web site link would need to be arranged by BMW Australia or BMWCC. 6. This forum is an ideal outlet to show our passion for MINI, but I think few people in Australia are aware of MINI2s existence & even fewer post. DMG can direct MINI owners to MINI2 - but I believe an "offical" encouragement from DMG can only be to an offical organisation - BMWCCV. 7. BMW Australia have been "looking at this" for a while. If enough people show interest, for example by joining BMWCC and then create a MINI Wing, then BMW Australia may take more notice. I don't want to sound negative on these proposals, but BMW Australia are concentrating on brand building, marketing, promotion and most importantly sales, at this early stage of MINI in Australia. The BMWCCV should be far more interested in what you are suggesting - its a great way for them to increase their membership with a promising future of MINI growth. I am keen to be a part of this & have already spoken to a few other MINI owners that I believe will be interested in the Club. The drive day on the 18th sounds great & I will encourage as many MINI owners to attend as I can. regards, DJP |

Offline | Thanks for your detailed response, DJP. ![]() I just typed a longish message but got another 504 gatewaty timeout (every second time that I post) and I'm sick of it. I just lost 5 minutes of typing. ![]() ![]() Not sure if it's our network or MINI2, my guys reckon it's the MINI2 site, of course they'd say that. Regards, ElTel Just got another 504 trying to post this. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
