Offline | You've certainly got a beautiful drive ahead of you. The Princes Hwy in NSW touches the coast many times as it proceeds southward, and you will find many majestic vistas unfold, as well as some beautiful seaside towns such as Ulladulla, Bateman's Bay and Eden. You will not want to rush through this area especially if the weather is fine (which it usually is.) The road is very windy in many parts and care should be exercised with regard to oncoming traffic. You're looking at anything from 450 to 600 kms from Wollongong to the Victorian border depending on how many detours that you take. Once across the Victorian border the Princes Hwy is mainly inland and only touches the coast at Lakes Entrance, a popular holiday and fishing spot. The road to Lakes Entrance is still windy and hilly, but from Lakes to Melbourne you're on a high speed main highway for 300 kms. Parts of country Gippsland, i.e. most of Eastern Victoria, are quite pretty and there are some lovely old towns. If you have time, say a spare day, go down to Wilsons Promontory for some great 3 hr walks to see some stunning beaches and bays. Staying near there is a little awkward, so expect to find accommodation up to 20 kms away. It is certainly a more scenic route than the Hume Highway, but you cannot do it in one day, and if it were me, I'd allow time to explore some of the areas that you pass through. Regards, ElTel |

Offline | Hi, A nice way to start is to go from Sydney down to Bowral in the southern highlands, then cut accross to the coast at Nowra via kangaroo valley. Beautiful countryside and nice windy roads. Look out for all the weekend warriors on bikes. Also try to make a detour up or down "brown mountain" at Bega. This is 20kms of steep windy roads. There are some great views on the way. The drive from the snowy mountains down through dalgetty and bombala is also nice. Speaking of snowy mountains if you get the opportunity the drive up to Mt Hotham in Victoria is fantastic, but a little out of the way. Also it would be a bit scary in winter! Anyway you go you will have fun. Hopefully Boo will post some advice. After all he has done 25,000kms in his car and seems to have seen most of the East coast! Robbo |
