Offline | Secondary bonnet catch for CAMS - AUS I am doing some driver training soon and the event is affiliated with CAMS. The end result is that I need a secondary method of locking down the bonnet. Has anyone done this without drilling holes or marking? Please post pics. Thanks Chris |

Offline | Hi, Where are you going? I am going to the BMW club meet at Winton in a fortnight. If you are going there it would be cool to meet. Some people have fancy bonnet restraints. I use the towhook from the toolkit which I place in the front. I then loop a thick belt (actually a stirrup strap, but similar to a thick leather belt) through the hoop and the bonnet grill. Not very pretty but it works fine. I couldn't find any good pics of the setup, but attached is a terrible magnified low res pic where you can get the idea. Ignore the red thing next to the strap, that is a timing timing transponder Cheers Robbo |

Offline | This photo shows your leather strap a little clearer. There's a few of us going up on the weekend to do driver training on the Saturday and maybe participate in the trials on Sunday. We'll make ourselves known to you. And follow you around the track to get some good lines. ![]() Regards, ElTel BTW, what tyres are you running there? |

Offline | Hi Robbo As Eltel as already mentioned, some of us Vics are heading to Winton in a fortnight with the BMWCCV for driver training and to watch the Sunday sprints. Certainly, we endeavour to meet up with you. When are you going to Winton? Chris PS How have you mounted the fire extingisher? |

Offline | I do something simular to robbo mcs but use a motor cycle tie down off the tow hook to one of the oblong slots under the bonnet. I also put some electrical tape on the bumper to protect the paint were the tie down rubs. |

Offline | Hi, I look forward to meeting up the melbourne minis at Winton! I am going down for both the driver training day and the supersprint. I haven't finalised my travelling details yet, but I probably will stay in Wangarratta as I have friends there. There are quite a few people coming down from the NSW BMW club, but as far as I know I am the only mini. To answer some questions : "Is there any way of running the strap up from behind the bumber and pulling it through the grille and tieing it off there? Might look a lot neater." : I don't know. Boo has a very neat bonnet restraint which attaches underneath his hood. However, I think this requires screwing something in there. "BTW, what tyres are you running there?" I run Dunlop Formula R DO1-J. These are a "semi-slick" street legal tyre. I run 205/50/16. These tyres offer fantastic grip, and many people in the BMW club use them. They are street legal, but I only use them on the track. "PS How have you mounted the fire extingisher?" I have mine mounted onto the passenger seat rails. I bought an extinguisher with a clip from revolution racegear. I bolted two clips onto the ends of the rails for the passenger seat, mounted a metal plate between these with the extinguisher attached. However, it was a real pain. Boo had his done by Peak Performance. It looks a lot better than mine! Cheers Robbo |

Offline | Most common secondary restraint to date is a carribena setup. Basically a looped wire strap is attached to one of the bolts securing the driver's side catch. This loop is attached to a carribena which is latched onto the same bar on the bonnet as the main latch hooks onto. Simply clip the carribena on as you are closing the bonnet and hey presto you're done. It's hidden from sight, and uses the same mounting points as the factory catch, so there should be no arguments from scrutineers about strength. Checked up with Peter Lawrence last year. The two catches on the bonnet are good, but because they have a single release lever in the cabin they aren't independent. If you could find a way of having two release cables going to two separate latches, you could use the factory latches. ![]() Feb 02 R50 |
