Saturday 27 March Queensland Raceway Sprints

The monthly Queensland Raceway Saturday Afternoon Sprints are on again this Saturday.

Sprint entry fee is $75, if paid on the day (or $65, if pre-paid). This entitles you to 2 sets of 5 lap sprints (plus warm up and warm down lap), and time permitting a third set. So far, there always has been time for the third, if you and your car are up to it.

A pre-paid form is available, if you want to save the 10 bucks, just ring QR on 5461 9111 and asked them to fax you one.

If you don't already have a AAA license or a QR license, it will cost you a further $55, but the license will last you 12 months. You will need a helmet, if you don't the track will provide you one, but you will need to purchase a cotton balaclava to keep their helmet dry for $5.

If you are going to run your car, you will need to be there about 11.30am to register and usually on the track by 1.00 - 1.30pm.

There is a canteen for some food and drink as well.

For any first timers, who are not sure if they want to put their cars on the track, or want to know how to prep your car, feel free to ask, or check out the Queensland Raceway website www.queenslandraceway.com.au

Even if you don't want to drive on the track or don't know if you want to, come along and have look. We have managed to get seven MINI's on the track at the same time, so the more the merrier.

BTW, if you think you'll come out for a drive or a look - let me know.

Ken

Trevor,

I'll try and save a pit for you - usual place left of the control tower. Get the MINI in first, then go register.

Hasn't been a Golf or a Bora out there so far this year, from memory. If you know 'em send em out.

Always a good day out.

Ambient temp of 28 degrees was a nice change, but takes longer for tyres to get to operating temp. Where as during summer tyres were OK at end of warm up lap, with my times very consistent over the 5 timed laps. This time round started slow and gained 0.5 seconds per lap until the final lap which was still about half a second down. Then again, that may have been as a result of too much time on the skid pan last week. It's a bit harder to drift on semi slicks and a dry track.

Trevor had his new tyres on (same as Rob's) and his times were coming down. Good to see. He indicated the opposite though - tyres felt really good for first couple of laps then start to go off.

Hopefully, third 1st out of 3 for the year for me. A good couple of seconds faster than the regulars, but you never know who's popped up in the field for the month that you've never seen before. Especially with 150 cars competing this month - almost double February.

Highlight of the day was a 996 GT2 (obviously inexperienced and nervous) behind me in the first set. He decided to overtake me in the final turn on to the straight on the warm up lap, barrels down the straight on cold tyres almost loses through turn 1, enough for me to be on his tail entering turn 2. He ran wide on 3, and letting me slip past him. With his straight line speed, he was just catching entering turn 3 next lap, when I dropped my front right onto the dirt for a split second. Even though I didn't lose any momentum and he wasn't gaining, it must have freaked him out, he spun behind me and came to a full stop mid turn. It's that part of track work that keeps you smiling. Brings back memories of 356s versus original Cooper Ss.

Anyway roll on April.

I am running the Falken - Azenis , and found that my two first laps (after the warm up lap) were my quickest at each set.......... I am happy with them as they are better than the run flats , but can see that they could be better......... The Dunlops seem to be the pick of the bunch!

Hi guys,
My name is Steve. I'm David's friend, I also have a clio sport. I normally run with the Honda guys.

I see you guys on the track running pretty quick, especially your black mini Ken! Your acceleration out the the corners are very fast indeed.
what time are you guys doing now?

Highlight of my day was passing a BMW M3 out of the final corner...he must've missed a gear or something.

See you guys in April!

Whao, 1:03 is superb time. I've done similar time to you last saturday in the 1:04s, did best of 1:04.07. A black integra DC2 Type R done a low 1:03 or high 1:02, but his car is heavily modded.

I hope to get into 1:03 next time before I change my suspension to coilovers.

Kad,

Brett has come out once or twice from St George in his BRG Cooper.

If you want to run your Cooper, you will be in Class A1. The S's are in Class A2, so you are not competing against their times.

Last month at least, there were only about 6 cars in that class, so just turning up scored some good points. It's 20 for 1st, 17 for 2nd, 15 for 3rd, 12 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th fastest, all the way down to one for finishing.

The Cooper handles so well, that it should not take much to get amongst the top points.

Last month, I think A1 had a couple Civics, a Jazz, a lowered HRV, a 80s Corolla and maybe an Escort.

If you go to www.queenslandraceway.com.au click on sprints and the download the Feb points table (excel spreadsheet) and the sort by class in ascending order, it will show you which cars you'd be competing against. Remembering it is not a race as such. It is simply your fastest lap for the day.

If you are interested in having a go, let me know.

I hope that it was not last Saturday that the Integra did the 1.03, and if it was, I hope he was on slicks - otherwise I've missed out on my 20 points. I was hoping for a hat trick.

What insurance ??

It's pretty much a case of don't use it unless you're prepared to loose it Fortunately the way you drive will largely determine the risk If you are carefull you should be right. At least you can't take out a bike rider or a pedestrian - or get done for speeding on the track.

Hehe, it was a bit of a silly thought. Perhaps Ill give running the mini a miss but id still love to come out an see what goes on. Im planning on buying a series 2 rx7 in a few months, so that might serve the purpose better.
