Anyone doing Wakefield on 10th May?

Guys,

Just wondering if anyone from MINI2 is participating in the BMW Club's practice day @ Wakefield for this coming Monday on the 10th May?

Before I head there I am having an adjustable sway bar fitted. Am also ditching the runflats and probably just getting some Falkens as an interim measure until I get some new light-weight 16" rims and nice soft rubber..

I am really hoping to shave a sec or two off my current 1.21min runflat Wakefield time. There appears to be a general thumbs up on the swaybar and with the runflats, well, what can you say?

Hi Carl,

I'll be in Tasmania, so wont be making it. Good luck with the new tyres and bar Hopefully it will nice and cold for the supercharger.

By the way, I went down to Wakefield for a test day a fortnight ago, and did a 1:13.54 which was 0.7 secs under my previous best.

Keep us updated with how you go on the day.

WOW - 1.13.54 is damn quick! You must be pretty close to maxing out the performance of your MINI now. The next few months are going to be cooler which will help but where are you hoping to pick up a little extra performance (even though you head up your class )?

I was talking to Dave Atkin regarding tyres and clarified if I got the Dunlop DO1/DO2s it would bump me up into your group ... I quickly told him I would work on driving skills for this season at the very least!! Hence holding off on those tyres and just getting some reasonably soft non-Rspec jobs. Probably just get some Falken Azenis or the like. I will let you know how the new tyre and bar combo goes with times. It would also be good to see Trelo out and about soon.

Enjoy Tassie!

Swaybar report

Guys,

Just got back from the Wakefield practice day. The swaybar gets a thumbs up! New road tyres - not so good

Time from Easter time was 1.21.07 and is now 1.19.8. The swaybar seems to get rid of some understeer and helps you flick the back end of the car around in really tight corners and keeps the car flatter on high speed corners. A negative is that if you put in sharp inputs like a swerve manovure the car feels skitty and unbalanced. However, overall it is an improvement on both the track and street for sure. I bought some relatively inexpensive Federal 17" 205/45 tyres http://www.federaltyres.com.au/news/release_ss.htm as a stop gap until I buy some lightweight 16" rims with dedicated track rubber. Whilst these street tyres were an improvement on the runflats they literally went "off" after about 3 laps and lost progressively more and more grip. My best times were always in lap 2 or 3 and progressively worse from there. Temps were cool so it was certainly not due to loss of engine power - the tyres simply lost grip the hotter they got ...

Road tyres are designed for the road and track for track. I doubt if there is any tyre which which will happily live and perform in both worlds. I will keep the Federals for the road but will definitely get a set of track tyres and rims as a next step. In my view there is no adequate compromise. In short, the swaybar is great and avoid using any road tyre for any beyond the most occaisional track work.

Hi Bob,

Yep, can highly recommend the swaybar - you will definitely notice a positive improvement and its inexpensive. It is a 3 way adjustable Whiteline swaybar which was only $225. http://www.whiteline.com.au/default....=/swaybars.htm Whiteline is really Selby Swaybars who have been doing swaybars for the Oz market for ages. You could fit it yourself easily or get your favourite mechanic to do it. It is less than 1hrs work. I sourced mine through www.qsz.com.au

I had mine set in the middle position which seemed about right. New thicker bushes are supplied as well.

Go for it!

The Federal Tyres were only $140 each and offer a better ride and grip than the stock runflats - absolutely guaranteed. Federal don't advertise which keep the overall costs down. I got 'em from Tempe Tyres http://www.tempetyres.com.au/ (fully sick but very competitive on price)

20mm tube with the flattenend end with the adjustment holes was 2x as thick than stock.

Quiet and OK in the wet (it rained on Mother's Day) Better in every way compared to runflats. At $140 fitted/balanced you really can't go wrong. I came upon them almost by accident as I wanted a set of Falken Azenis but they don't make them for the Mini 17s. Compared to, say, Dunlop 9000s at $350 each I didn't have too much agonizing in giving them a go.
