Stu, Do you use coilovers or standard coil setup and what sort of spring rates do you guys run?

Hi,

I'm not Stu, but I can answer the question, as we both run the same setup

Initially we ran a simple adjustable coil over setup over stock shocks. This was a cheap way of doing things, and worked amazingly well. The standard shocks are seriously good, and very underated IMHO they are better than many of the after market shocks around. Mind you, if you get a quote to replace the OEM shocks, they are more expensive than most aftermarket shocks as well

We did a lot of testing with different spring rates, and finally settled on what we thought was the best for the track This is basically ridiculously hard in the front, and mildly hard in the rear

I wouldn't want to recommend any particular spring rate, as this depends on lots of variables, eg driver preferences and style, ride height, tyres, other suspension components (eg camber plates, bars etc)

Running these spring rates on the standard shocks worked incredibly well on smooth roads, eg racetracks. On bumpy rally stages the OEM shocks couldn't cope and eventually lost the plot, and turned into pogo sticks

Once the OEM shocks were toasted, we have replaced them with adjustable Bilstein shocks, revalved to suit our spring rates. These perform much better over bumpy rally stages, or bumpy sections of racetrack eg turn 4-5 OP GP Also, having the adjustment is ideal for going between different tracks and rally stages The difference on smooth racetracks is less noticeable

Having my car and Stu's car running the same set-up with different drivers has proved invaluable in setting up the suspension, as we double the feedback, and get to compare times and experiences etc

In summary, I would probably recommend against replacing the original shocks just for the sake of it. They are incredibly good and durable, and work well with stiff springs except on the most bumpy surfaces. However, if your standard shocks are worn, then go aftermarket

Cheers

Robbo

Thanks a lot Robbo i was looking at a set of KW's as they have seperate rebound and bump but as you suggested i may stay with the stock shock for a while as my bank acccount is already getting stretched to the limit with the way im going.

cheers

Hi Michael,

Yep in line with what Robbo says I would recommend staying with stock as long as you can. We did a number of rallys in our cars with stock shocks and performed great.

The guys at Peak Performance do a nice coil over mod on the stock strut tower that keeps the stock shock setup but allows addition of different springs and ride height. Personally I think this was the easiest and cheapest suspension mod. Allows you to fit a range of springs while you work out what sort of ride/performance you are after.

As Robbo said once you have done these in then the next step is logical..

Will try and find some footage of MINI pogo!!!

Hi Carl,

I must congratulate you on your recent performances You are performing well above your weight, and beating seriously fast cars

It's almost beyond belief how much you have progressed in the last 2 years Check out this LINK To go from that starting point, to your current times is amazing, especially considering some of the drivers you are currently spanking. Also, you are in a fully road registered car, which you drive home

Cheers

Robbo

BMW Z4 M Coupé as motor racing kit.
Unveiling in Geneva: On the occasion of the Automobilsalon, Prof Dr Burkhard Göschel, BMW Group Board Member Purchasing and Development, introduced a new racing car for customer motor racing.
The Motorsport Version of the BMW Z4 M Coupé, which has already made a big impression as a production model, is the first two-seater BMW Motorsport offers for customer teams. When it came to the development, BMW faced a huge challenge: The car had to have what is needed to race successfully on the world’s most demanding and spectacular racetrack, the Nürburgring’s famous Nordschleife. The new motorsport coupé can be used by private BMW customer teams in the German Endurance Championship and in the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race.

The power unit of the beefy coupé is a BMW Motorsport designed 3.2-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine delivering about 400bhp, with the suspension area in particular benefiting from the knowledge gained from the successful BMW M3 GTR project. With its varied component ranges, BMW Motorsport and BMW Racing Parts Distribution offer customer teams a new technology platform for use in many miscellaneous international racing and club sport series, with the Nordschleife enthusiasts not being the only interested party, as the coupé also represents the perfect car for use in the Belgian Belcar series and other, non-European, endurance series.

The kit can be ordered from May 2006 at BMW Motorsport and will be available for an estimated € 250,000 (plus VAT).

Quick question for robbo and/or Stu … what tyre size are you guys running on your 16s? And this may be a dumb question, but if the MINI load rating is 84, do you reckon an 83 rated tyre would be okay for track use?
