Quick question for any Aussie online now?

I know this will probably get moved soon, but I just had another call from the dealer.

Did any of you have this care package stuff done to your MINI?

i.e. That is:

Paint Protection
Leather protections
Fabric protections
etc?

Do any of you recommend anything BMW provide before my pickup?

Theyre apparently ringing back this arvo. It all sounds pretty expensive though...

Thanks in advance

none of that... it's all VERY high margin stuff.
paint protection, you may as well wax the car yourself
fabric protection... get a $20 can of scotchguard (must do this actually)
leather protection... get a $15 packet of the meguiars leather wipes.

Scotty, save your dollars. By the way you'll take care of the car, there is absolutely no need.
While youre there, get them to throw in some merchandise!
Sounds like its arrived??

Thanks Mick and enzo.

Yeah, I had imagined it would be high-markup stuff. Im pretty sure someone told me a while back that the paint protection at least, was only a wax....

Yeah it has enzo Where you been? Pick it up on Wednesday (ive got a few pics of it in my gallery)

Scotty,

Unless you live in your car (like some MINI2 members ) or you are an utter pig, then I would suggest you follow MickyD's advice.

As for the paint protection, there are some very good packages in the market and are worthwhile (if your car is constantly subjected to the elements). I suggest you shop around or bite the bullet and go with BMW's version (and price).

Thanks MickyD - so thats to say their detailing doesnt include a wax? And I should do this when the car is in my driveway?

I think we have the scotchguard at home - that'll be a definate.
And I'll have to check my Meguiars pack, might have some leather wipes?

Thanks mate.

Hmmm...

1.Paint Protection - waste of money (WOM)
2.Leather protection - WOM
3.Fabric protection - WOM
4.Rustproofing - WOM ROTFLMAO
5.Tinting - probably the only item of any value they try and stich you up with. It can invariably be done elsewhere cheaper and with higher quality material - however if there are any stuffups it's the dealers problem which is not to be undervalued.

I am aware that in some dealerships this is one of their highest profit areas. I hadn't heard of it being done by MINI dealers before though. This type of stuff is usually Hyundai territory where they can make as much money out of this stuff as they do selling the car They usually lock you in a small room with a very attractive young lady who tells you that if you love you're new car and want to keep it in top nick (aledgedly will help your resale) then you just have to have this 2.5k of useless stuff.

IMHO most of those products don't work at all. It's all a maintenance issue. Keep the car clean inside and out, apply protectants yourself regularly (polish, leather conditioner) etc, and you'll be fine. If you want to go ferral and never wash it, treat it like a fast food restraunt, then maybe, but in the examples I know of it only gets worse as it lulls you into a false sense of security... i.e, I don't have to wash that bird poop off till next weekend as I spent $500 on paint protection..... Next weekend comes..... Oh, look it's coming off.... funny my roof wasn't silver before.... I can provide examples/more info if you want....

Clubman less....

Thanks Eddie

Not a pig thats for sure - I am near obsessive about my Pulsar now. Cant imagine what I'll be like with the MINI

The car will be garaged all the time - but is outside during the day at work. And sort of under trees. Possibility of bird splash....

But paint protection is just a really good wax right?

Thanks mate,
Scotty

Hehe thanks Steve

Gotta be quick around here

I had imagined as much - the tinting may be something I will consider - but as you say, I can probably get a cheaper job with good materials from Altapac or something..

Ill see what BMW quote me for it.

Cheers mate,
Scotty

yeah, each stone chip is a reminder of the smile oyu had on your face right til the stone chip though!!!

How do you rust proof plastic anyway???

Tell them to put the hard sell on their Ford buyers - which do rust after 2 years. Not a car thats made for euro climate where they pour salt on roads to stop Icy accidents etc...

Todd

P.S - get some of the rubber MickyD has to stop water from coming up through the guards intot eh engine bay, that'l make things easier to keep clean.

I got the rubber stuff from bunnings, I've still got a few metres left if you haven't done it by the next time we have a cruise.
